1. As a child, I had similar experiences with toys that looked like one character but were actually another with certain similar elements. This happened to me with one very similar to Rambo called Delta Force or something like that, which freed my mind because I didn't limit myself to seeing it as just Rambo; my imagination flowed in other directions. When did you both first encounter the original Starroid Raiders toys by Tomland? Do you still have any of them?
GAVIN – I did not see these amazing figures until much later in life. Maybe a decade or so ago, my buddy gave me one. It was pretty worn out, and had no accessories but I loved it immediately. So yes, for Starroids I’ve only known them as an adult collector.
DOC: Me too. A fellow collector, a friend of ours, gave me a couple for Christmas and it sent me down a wild rabbit hole. I became obsessed.
2. What attracted you as children to the Starroid Raiders toys that still resonates with you today?
GAVIN- as just mentioned, I had not seen them until I was much older, but I will say what attracted me to them when I learned about them, is the untethered creativity behind them. They are bright, bold and fun. I greatly appreciate how fun they are. I see them as a real piece of nostalgia, taking us back to what seemed a more simple time. I hope the new figures we make will provide that same kind of escapism and triggering of the imagination that the classic toys did for me.
DOC: I think that if I had found them as a kid, I would have loved them for how weird and imaginative they are. And everyone loves an underdog. I mean, I loved my Go-Bots, even though it was pretty clear that Transformers were eating their lunch.
3. I see that for this revitalized but conceptually faithful version of The Starroid Raiders called PLANETOID RAIDERS, you created a jingle. Are there plans for an animated version? Is it possible you also have plans for a comic book series?
GAVIN – The possibilities are as limitless as the galaxy itself! And what’s this you say about a comic? Doc is way ahead of you on that! An 80s style mini-comic will be available with one of the pledge tiers!
DOC: I’m fairly sure that a Planetoid Raiders animated TV show is just the start. I imagine 10 or 15 years from now the PCU (Planetoid Cinematic Universe) will be dominating the global box office.
4. This Kickstarter project will include this collection where you will define the distinct personalities of each character. What inspired you to create these personalities?
GAVIN – We just tried to be as stupid-fun as we could possibly be. These space weirdos are the SCI FI sitcom you never knew you could not live without.
DOC: You kinda look at their weird faces and just know who they are. Like Snatoon– look at him. That dude is clearly into low-fi music. And Ryot, that guy eats soup all the time. Look in his eyes. You can see it. Sloog hates it when you leave the lights on at night. He doesn’t want to waste power. That much is obvious.
5. What rewards are you most excited about in this Kickstarter project?
GAVIN – SO MANY! The above mentioned tier with a comic book is gonna be super fun. I’m also really excited about the Arcade Raiders, ADD ON figures that will be unlocked along the milestones of the campaign. We have some incredible figures planned. And just looking at the core 8 figures on cardback fills me with joy, I think toy collectors and art toy folks are really going to enjoy these. OH– also, speaking of ADD ON’s I can’t wait to get myself an Arcade Raiders Trucker Hat.
DOC: I’m into the fact that, late in the campaign, we’re going to add a reward tier where some backers get to actually go to space. That won’t be on launch day (pardon the pun), but it’ll be put in later on. Just wait for it. It’ll be a kind of expensive tier, and it’ll be a stretch goal to unlock and stuff, but it’ll be great. You can live in space for like a year if you pick that reward (oxygen, radiation shielding, and other life support services not included).
6. Do you plan to expand this universe and characters with new projects or new projects with other new creations?
GAVIN – ABSOLUTELY!! We have way more ideas than we could fit into just one campaign… but the future of Planetoid Raiders will soon be in the hands of collectors and toy fans. If the people come to Kickstarter and pledge and pre-order… we’ll keep making fun space weirdos for everyone! Aliens, Robots, Cyborgs, you name it. But we do need the support from toy collectors on Kickstarter to make this launch happen. Once we have a satisfying core group of figures for everyone, we can start thinking about the expanded future… Jetpacks? Starfighters? Alien Monsters? Let’s make it happen!
DOC: When I was a child a real alien visited me in the woods outside my home. He didn’t speak any Earth languages, but he held out a crystal for me to see. When I peered into the crystal, I saw a world where there was no hate or war, only love and waves upon waves of Planetoid Raiders toys. I hope that was a true prophetic vision of things to come, and not just some weird alien prank.
