Education in the Stacks: Librarians offer Advice on Programming

In this workshop, six librarians from a variety of library types and backgrounds will meet with individual attendees about potential library programming. Each panel member will spend 10 minutes with someone who wants to create a program of some sort for libraries. That person will tell the panel member their ideas, and the panel member will spitball some ways they can hone their idea into a viable program. How to connect it to education, what type of spaces might be a good fit, and a price range they can ask for.

Express Your Emanata: Using Comics and Graphic Novels for Social-Emotional Learning

Do your preschool and elementary-age students struggle to put their big feelings into words? Do the clouds over their heads leave you with a big question mark? The visual language of comics including emanata (a lightbulb above the head for an idea, three birds circling the noggin of a recently bonked character) builds the bridge between the complex thoughts and feelings of the youngest learners and a growing vocabulary. Join Jana Tropper (preschool/elementary speech-language pathologist, Reading with Pictures Director of Literacy), Lisa Wu (former teacher and industry expert), and Jamie Yocum (elementary librarian) as they present ways to use the visual language of sequential art such as emanata help our youngest learners understand and express their feelings and social-emotional needs.

Comics or Graphic Novels: A Big Question for a Big Moment

Scholars, industry professionals, and creators all have different ideas about the sequential art medium. Today, every single genre is represented through it. On top of this, the rapid explosion of the K-12 school market, the increasing demand for manga and the rising popularity of animation on streaming platforms, what is the future of the medium and how do we define it? There is no question that comics have solidified their place in modern literature and are rapidly expanding into new spaces. A panel of creators, publishers, educators, and scholars of the medium will join to discuss the history of the sequential art medium, consider the semantics when defining, naming, and categorizing these texts, and the challenges with promoting and publishing them in new markets.

Censorship and attempts at censorship can take on many forms in our education systems, libraries, bookstores and government agencies across the country. It also becomes more intensified with each new change in the political environment. So what can you do when faced with a challenge? How do you react? Maybe the better question is: How do I prepare for this? When it comes to books of any kind, whether it is graphic novels and manga, or prose of any kind, the best measures are preventative. This group of panelists represents decades of experience with a wide range of legal challenges in the publishing industry.
