REVIEW IN ENGLISH

This new miniseries is written by Skottie Young and illustrated by the Venezuelan Jorge Corona, narrates the adventure of Abel who leaves his home to escape his father's abuses from one coast to another US coast discovering a magical world accompanied by of your pet a fox that does not represent HIS conscience, just the opposite.

Where does it come from?

Abel lives with his abusive father in the Midwest of the USA, a place that is surrounded by plains and lakes, in this remote town Abel distributes newspapers and one day he falls asleep.

What's going on?

Abel wakes up with a scolding from his father because he had not distributed the newspapers on Saturday morning accompanied by his fox (anthropomorphic, because it talk and gives him the least expected advice), when they start delivering the newspapers a strong wind carries them so Abel prefers to buy snacks with his friends in the town and he gets into a big mess, which any boy of his age gets into.

Abel's nightmares are recurrent and involve a monster made of wind that seems to be throwing him far away.

Abel's father scolds him for getting into trouble in the town, not only physically mistreating him, he also does it with his words, it is very hard in his scolding, exaggerated and out of place, this makes Abel explode and escapes, but in the middle of a paranormal situation.

Art and Plot

Skottie Young takes us to a world that is familiar but with small magical elements, which seem everyday, this comic has a deep and real history wrapped in peculiar circumstances, reminiscent of the Latin American Magical Realism.

The art of Jorge Corona manages to balance the drama, realism and fantasy perfectly, the dynamism of each panel as well as the facial expressions of the characters is admirable.

Summary
Middelwest is an interesting series that hooks you from the first page, with a character with whom it is very easy to identify as Abel is.

1.- How did you get in touch with the well-known illustrator / writer Skottie Young to do MiddleWest?

I met Skottie when I was studying at Savannah College of Art and Design, he came as guest, I was a fan of his work for a long time and from there I tried to maintain contact every time we met at conventions. When my book Feathers came out, Skottie commented on Twitter that she liked it and from there I followed my career as an illustrator. Some years ago we were talking about maybe collaborating on a project but the schedules did not coincide and we ended up working on other projects. A year or so ago we talked about working together again and luckily this time we could.

2.- Your art has its own identity that is well marked in all your works, how was that interaction with the writer Skottie Young that also illustrates?

At first quite intimidating hahaha, as I told you, I am a fan of his work and sending him the design concepts was like presenting a work to a teacher who will evaluate it. But Skottie always maintained that I am the illustrator of the book and he wanted me to mark the graphic direction of it, only with notes and comments when he believed that something could work better in another way. The good thing was also that gave me space to try new things in terms of technique and language knowing that I have someone who could guide me with his experience.

3.- This is not your first independent project, do you plan to make more volumes of this comic? Or do you have other plans on the horizon?

No, actually I'm coming out of another independent project that works with writer Jake Semahn entitled No. 1 With a Bullet. For now, Middlewest's plan is to publish 3 volumes of 6 chapters each and evaluate if it is worthwhile to continue with the publication. That would keep me busy for a while so the rest I work on covers or shorter projects.

4.- Could you explain what this series is about? What elements intervene? Could you say that it resembles Latin American magical realism?

Quite a bit, magical realism is one of the things we talk about a lot when we come up with the aesthetics and plot of the book. In general Middlewest is the adventure of Abel, a young man trying to escape a violent family dynamics and begins a journey through our fantastic version of the North American Midwest where magic hides behind the ordinary and thus break with the heritage of a abusive father. It is a bit of a love letter to animated films with which we grew up where there is always a little more darkness and danger, where young people manage to overcome tests that help them grow.

5.- Is there any element of this story that you feel identified with?

A little, Skottie based this story on his youth and most of the scenes are more related to growing up in the North American Midwest. For me it is that more of understanding parents as people who make mistakes and who have their own battles. This happens all over the world sometimes earlier or later but I think it's something that we all relate to. When I think of the scenario, if I believe that the road trips I made with my Dad in Venezuela, they are the basis for generating a little bit of the images and possibilities hidden in the open country, in the plains, a little bit of legends and stories that are generated in places like this.

6.- For all those young illustrators who are starting to dream one day to see their name in an edition of Image Comis, DC or Marvel, what can you recommend?

Nowadays it is very easy with the Internet and how connected is the world of generating content and immediately publish it. Creating constantly is an essential part of this industry and showing that work is the way to get it to the right hands. I think there is a myth of the big companies and the idea that it legitimizes the work but in fact the more I work in this industry the more I realize the different ways that exist to be published.
