ACCLAIMED SLAYERS: A BUFFYVERSE STORY WRITERS AMBER BENSON AND CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN REUNITE FOR ORIGINAL IRISH FOLK HORROR COMIC SERIES THE HEIR, COMING FROM MAD CAVE STUDIOS

The upcoming five-issue limited comic series will be illustrated by Irish The Closet artist Gavin Fullerton, feature colors by Juancho!, and letters by Becca Carey

OCT. 20, 2026 (LOS ANGELES, CA) — Acclaimed Slayers: A Buffyverse Story audio drama co-writers and co-directors Amber Benson and Christopher Golden are returning to the realm of horror for original Irish folk comic book series The Heir, coming from Mad Cave Studios. The upcoming five-issue limited series will be illustrated by Irish artist Gavin Fullerton (The Closet, Bog Bodies) and feature colors by Juancho! (Revolution 9), and letters by Becca Carey (Absolute Wonder Woman). Fans of Hokum, Ready or Not, The Haunting of Hill House, and Irish folklore will love this dark supernatural tale following a young woman’s Gothic-tinged descent into madness in a mysterious Irish estate full of family secrets, where she’ll have to fight against ominous forces for the one she loves. The first issue of The Heir will hit shelves on January 13, 2027.

In The Heir, Dani’s first trip to Ireland with her fiancé, Conor, was supposed to revolve around them announcing their engagement to his family. Instead, it’s the funeral of his grandfather, immersing Dani in a labyrinth of family secrets, child abduction, dark history, and ancient Irish folklore. Spiraling into murder, curses, and monstrosity, The Heir thrusts Dani into a race against time to save the one she loves the most, no matter the cost.

Amber Benson is a Bram Stoker-nominated writer as well as a prestigious actor, director, and producer. She iconically played the beloved role of Tara Maclay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and has since been a major story architect in the Buffy universe, authoring comics. Aside from Slayer stories, Benson has written the dark fantasy Calliope Reaper-Jones series and the Echo Park Coven urban fantasy trilogy. She has frequently teamed up with Golden; they created the supernatural animated web series Ghosts of Albion and the books spinning out of it. Benson and Golden led the massive Audible hit Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which features alt-universe storytelling and brought back the series cast for the voice acting. The Heir marks Benson’s return to original non-IP-based comic book storytelling.

"Chris and I are so excited to be working with Mad Cave and artist Gavin Fullerton to bring our new folk horror project, The Heir, to readers everywhere,” said Benson. “Inspired by '70s psychological horror like Rosemary’s Baby and The Wicker Man, The Heir has all the good stuff: dark family curses, bloody sacrifice, and ghostly creatures beckoning from deep in the woods. If we’ve done our job right, The Heir should leave you feeling unsettled and praying you remembered to lock your doors before you started reading.”

Christopher Golden is a multi-Bram Stoker & Shirley Jackson award-winning, New York Times bestselling writer, celebrated for his dark fantasy, horror, and thriller stories. In the comic realm, he notably co-created the gothic-inspired alt-history The Outerverse comic franchise with frequent collaborator Mike Mignola (Hellboy) at Dark Horse and has scribed many successful Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-in novels and comic books. He also co-created the supernatural original limited series Talent and The Sisterhood with collaborator Thomas E. Sniegoski. Now he’s bringing his skills in the dark fantasy and horror worlds to The Heir.

“Amber and I dreamed up The Heir some years ago as a potential indie horror film,” said Golden. “When we saw all the cool stuff Mad Cave was publishing, we talked about teaming up with them on a project, and knew it had to be The Heir. Irish folk horror, creepy woods, bloody murder, and creatures out of legend make for great comics. Irish horror comics artist Gavin Fullerton was the perfect person to bring it all to nightmarish life.”

Artist Gavin Fullerton is diving into his own personal Irish roots to illustrate The Heir. Fullerton has previously collaborated with high-profile writers such as Something is Killing the Children creator James Tynion IV for The Closet, Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale for BAGS (or a Story Thereof), and has ventured into illustrating creator-owned Image Comics series such as Bog Bodies with Declan Shalvey. Fullerton also created, wrote, and illustrated his own dark horror-fantasy one-shot comic Tuatha with IDW.

"Being Irish I’m always looking to make stories rooted in our mythology and culture, so when I got asked to work on The Heir, I jumped at the chance,” said Fullerton. “Chris and Amber have crafted a beautifully tragic horror story and it was great to be able to take inspiration from the people and places around me to draw this book."

The first issue will feature variant covers by an all-star lineup of artists including Jamie McKelvie (The Wicked + The Divine), Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Rebekah Isaacs (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) with colors by Marissa Louise (Stranger Things), and Chuma Hill (DC’s Absolute Universe), to be revealed soon.

The first issue of The Heir will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, January 13, 2027 (FOC November 30, 2026). The title will become available across digital platforms as well. Preorder through your local comic shop or from Mad Cave directly.

What does it come from?
DARKNESS BEFORE THE DAWN: THE FALL OF THE AVENGERS... The point of no return! After the cataclysmic events of AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #4, the world is torn asunder. Humanity turns against super heroes. And for David Colton, what is the price of all that great power? See where the pieces fall in preparation for Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto's AVENGERS #1!

Plot
The consequences of Red Hulk’s explosion in Russia are far-reaching, shaking the foundations of international politics. Captain Marvel attempted to absorb the energy from the blast, but only managed to do so momentarily; as a result, her powers are now diminished to 10% of their full capacity. Bucky appears not to have survived, and at least 9,000 people perished in that Russian town.

David Colton—known as Miracle Man—is tormented by the event, feeling a deep sense of guilt as his own actions triggered the catastrophe. Wolverine serves as his anchor, reminding him that he, too, knows what it means to make mistakes. He urges Colton to make amends where possible, and to set aside the irreparable, focusing instead on addressing the problems that can still be solved.

The United Nations is set to issue a decree to regulate superpowered individuals. Nick Fury Jr. has aligned himself with UN Secretary-General Riani, and S.H.I.E.L.D. will work alongside the United Nations to exert control over these beings. The United States did not vote in favor of this resolution—largely because the country is home to the highest concentration of superpowered individuals, and the government fears them—yet the U.S. intends to work clandestinely with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Peter Parker is left shaken, but after an encounter with a relative of one of the victims, he becomes convinced that the Avengers must continue their mission to save the world.

Reed Richards continues to analyze the box that granted Colton his powers. While its origin remains unknown, he has discovered that another individual—aside from David Colton—possesses powers derived from this same source. The power is linked to another dimension, though the exact mechanism remains a mystery.

Overwhelmed by the situation, Tony Stark decides to retire from the Avengers. He chooses to focus his expertise on creation, utilizing a device originally belonging to Doctor Doom—a tool capable of generating universes and simulating how they evolve based on the decisions made within them. However, he catches a glimpse of a future in which Mephisto murders Peter Parker. In the end, it is revealed that Bucky survived the explosion and was recruited by Nick Fury. Captain America has finally awakened and is now recovering.

The stage is set for a new Avengers saga, taking place in a world that hates them—yet one they have sworn to defend.

Art
The artwork is rich in detail, elevated to a higher level of quality through the use of varied textures. It features designs that are as overwhelming as they are mind-blowing, characterized by heroic poses and a wealth of textures that create a striking sense of dynamism. This duo of illustrators is truly magnificent.

Summary
The aftermath of Red Hulk’s explosion sends shockwaves through the Marvel Universe, leaving the Avengers to face a world that does not approve of them.

What does it come from?
In the aftermath of last issue’s epic showdown with Benedict Arnold and his hooded goons, Simon’s life has dramatically changed. Unsure where to take his next steps, his only salvation comes in the form of his only friend left: Albert Einstein.

Plot
Simon suffered a spinal injury while killing Benedict Arnold's last henchman, leaving him confined to a wheelchair.

Albert Einstein tends to him and tries to lift his spirits, but Simon is in a state of deep depression, blaming himself for the deaths of Margaret, May, and Albert; he knows he will walk again because his body is healing, but he simply has no desire to do so.

Just as Albert Einstein is about to give up hope for Simon's recovery and return to Germany, Paul Revere—another U.S. Founding Father whom Benedict loathed and who has also become immortal—appears out of nowhere to explain something to Albert about Simon's immortality.

This installment deals with the pain of Simon's loss, even as his world—filled with danger and mystery—keeps turning.

Art
Bryan Hitch brings his cinematic vision to the table, directing mesmerizing action sequences and capturing the details and tones of bygone eras. The colors create a perfect atmosphere that transports the reader to the early 20th century.

His handling of scale is mesmerizing; he transports and shakes the reader with striking, realistic visuals in a format that closely resembles cinema.

Albert tries to help Simon recover, but the loss proves nearly insurmountable
