ENTREVISTA CON MONTY NERO SOBRE "DEATH SENTENCE LONDON"

Monty Nero (Amazing X-men Annual, Hulk Annual #1)  es un joven y versátil escritor , quien acaba de terminar la segunda parte de su saga Death Sentence (Sentencia de Muerte) editado por Titan Comics, donde unos jóvenes tienen la oportunidad de obtener super-poderes pero eso significaba que morirían en menos de seis meses.

En el segundo volumen Londres, trata sobre los daños colaterales del desastre causado por todos estos jóvenes con super-poderes, entre las reacciones inmediatas está la ejecución de leyes gubernamentales para evitar que más jóvenes se contagien con el virus G-Plus, (causante de otorgar super-poderes que que es de transmisión sexual), por lo tanto hay un toque de queda que prohíbe el sexo.

Este controversial cómic que mezcla el género de super-héroes con el sexo ya presentó su edición compilada de la mano del ilustrador Martin Simmonds, para lo cual hicimos una entrevista exclusiva con Monty Nero sobre este trabajo, primero se presenta la entrevista traducida y luego en su idioma original:

1.- En nuestra primera entrevista hablamos del poder absoluto corrompe absolutamente, ahora en tu nueva serie creator owned Death Sentence London explora lo que sucede después de adquirir un gran poder, las terribles consecuencias y la reacción del mundo ante eso, ¿es el miedo a algo nuevo el mayor temor de cualquier civilización?

Creo que hay temores más grandes. En este libro estamos centrados en la lucha entre los derechos individuales y los derechos del Estado. Esa parece ser la problemática clave de nuestros tiempos -  un hilo que enlaza una gran cantidad de las noticias y los conflictos de este siglo. Pero este no es el único miedo que tiene la sociedad. El miedo al terrorismo ha reemplazado el temor de una guerra nuclear y el comunismo soviético. El virus G-plus nos permite introducir el drama a todos estos cambios en una escala épica.

2.- Cuando el gobierno establece de manera desesperada una ley marcial y la abstinencia forzada, sin duda muestra que el control absoluto no va a resolver ninguna crisis, ¿crees que los gobiernos deberían primero estudiar la situación para luego tratar de resolver sus problemas de una manera más sutil?

Sí.

3.- ¿Cuál es tu fuente de inspiración a la hora de escribir? porque creo que su libro es tan inteligente que cubre involuntariamente una situación difícil como la crisis migratoria en Europa, una crisis humanitaria

Miro el mundo a mi alrededor y lo reflejo. Occupy, Anonymous, los levantamientos de masas y protesta civil en Ucrania, Ferguson, La primavera árabe, los disturbios, la militarización de la policía. Los gobiernos siempre han tenido miedo de reuniones clandestinas o sin permiso,  puede ser un rave en un almacén o una marcha política. Sin embargo, la Internet ha dado a la gente común una mayor libertad para organizarse y movilizarse para expresar lo que creen. Los gobiernos de todo el mundo le asusta eso y han reaccionado en gran medida, la introducción de nuevas leyes opresivas que les permiten mayores libertades para espiar las comunicaciones privadas, arrestos de personas sin cargos y supresión de la protesta. Son tiempos atemorizantes debido a que se están erosionando los derechos fundamentales de la democracia. 

4.- Este libro habla de sexo y super-poderes, ¿esta temática te ha causado problemas morales o malas críticas?

Un poco, pero eso no me molesta. Una editorial se negó a imprimir el libro, así que cambié de editorial. El libro también fue prohibido en las prisiones estadounidenses. Creo aquellos en contra deben tener su mente muy estrecha o ser mojigatos. Es un cómic para adultos, obviamente, y los adultos siempre les han gustado los superhéroes y el sexo - desde las obras de teatro Griegas hasta la actualidad. Veo Death Sentence  como parte de esa grandiosa tradición.

5.- Este libro contiene el impresionante arte a mano de Martin Simmonds, ¿cuando un artista  trabaja alejado de la tecnológica te inspira a trabajar más duro o te genera problemas con los plazos  de entrega?

Martin pinta todo su arte en Photoshop. Pero parece diseñada a mano. Él es talentoso y rápido. Estoy admirado de sus habilidades.

6- ¿Es Death Sentence una trilogía? ¿o vas a continuar todo el tiempo que desees? ¿va a haber un nuevo capítulo?, cuando saldrá a la luz?

El siguiente tomo es de seis partes y se llamará Death Sentence Revolt (Sentencia de Muerte Revuelta). Saldrá pronto. Martin acaba de terminar el tercer capítulo en estos momentos. Y luce ASOMBROSO. Posee diferentes técnicas secuenciales de los libros anteriores. Siempre estamos experimentando y avanzando hacia adelante. Tiene más suspenso, es tensa y emocionante.

7.- Hablando de otras cosas, excelente trabajo con Amazing X-men Annual #1, en este orden de ideas: ¿vas a tener un título en DC Comics pronto? ¿Se puede decir algo al respecto?

Sí. Estoy trabajando en algunas cosas con una compañía americana. Pero no estoy haciendo ningún tipo de publicidad para ello por el momento. Death Sentence es mi prioridad en este momento.

1.- In our first interview we talk about when absolute power corrupts, now in your new miniseries/creator owned "Death Sentence London" explore the idea of what happens after anyone acquire a great power, the terrible consequences and the reaction of the world to that, is the afraid of something new the biggest fear of any civilization?

I think there are bigger fears. In this book we're more focussed on the stuggle between the rights of the individual and the rights of the state. That seems to be the key issue of our time - a thread linking a lot of the news and conflict this century. But its not the only fear society has. The fear of terrorism has replaced the fear of a nuclear war and Soviet communism. The G-plus virus allows us to dramatise all these changes on an epic scale

2.- When the government establishes a desperate martial law and forced abstinence, shows that absolute control for sure won’t solve any crisis, do you believe that governments should first study of the situation then try to solve their problems with more subtly?

Yes.

3.- What is the source of inspiration when you write? cause I think your book is so intelligent and  that unintentionally covers a tough immigrant situation in Europe, a humanitarian crisis

I look at the world around me and reflect it. Occupy, Anonymous, the mass uprisings and civil protest in the Ukraine, Ferguson, The Arab Spring, riots, the militarsation of the police. Governments have always been scared of unlicensed gatherings  whether its a warehouse rave or a political march. But the internet has given ordinary people greater freedom to organise and mobilise themselves to express what they believe. Governments across the world are freaked out by that and they've largely over reacted, introducing oppressive new laws which allow them greater freedoms to spy on private communications, hold people without charge, and suppress protest. Fundamental rights of democracy are being eroded. It's a scary time.

4.- This book talks about sex and super-powers, have this take gives you moral issues or outside bad criticism?

A little, but it doesn't bother me. One printer refused to print the book, so we changed printer. The book got banned in American Prisons too. I think you'd have to be pretty small minded or prudish to take issue with it. It's a comic for adults, obviously, and adults have always liked superheroes and sex - Right from the Greek plays to the present day. I see Death Sentence as part of that grand tradition.

5.- This book has the stunning hand art of Martin Simmonds, when an artist work in a non technologic way does that gives you some internal type of hard work inspiration or trouble with the deadlines?

Martin paints all his art in Photoshop. But it looks hand drawn. He's so talented and fast too. I'm in awe of his skills.

6- Is “Death Sentence” trilogy? or will you continue as long as you want? If there will be a new series when it will the next “Death Sentence” come out?

The next series is another six parts and its called Death Sentence Revolt. It'll be out soon. Martin's just finishing the third issue as we speak. It looks ASTOUNDING. It's got a few different sequential techniques from the previous books. We're always experimenting and moving forward. It's a lot more of a thriller too, tense and exciting. 

7.- Talking aside, great work in "Amazing X-Men Annual # 1", will you have a book in Dc Comics  soon? Can you say something about it?

Yeah. I'm working on some stuff with an American company. But I'm not doing any publicity for it just yet. Death Sentence is my focus right now.
