ENTREVISTA EXCLUSIVA CON MARÍA SANTAOLALLA / EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH COLORIST MARIA SANTAOLALLA

Me encantaría.

1. What was your motivation to give colors and shades to comics? Has a relative showed you material that you introduced in this universe?

Well, my motivation and beginnings in the world of comics may not be the most common, hehe. I must confess that I had not picked up a comic and almost even knew what they were until I met Jacinto Jimenez with almost 18 years and really if it was not for him, I'm pretty sure I would not spend this. He had drawn comics since childhood and I slowly passed his love for this medium and I was also seeing how difficult it is to make one! I would never have imagined to do a comic could have such a long job, really, it's amazing ... For years, I hardly pay much attention to comics if I'm honest. It was after finishing my career; I did tourism at college, yep a training related to my profession, hehehe, I began to delve into this world and I started with color. Jacinto took up drawing and along with another friend who liked to write, they decided to do a comic. I spent a lot of time with them, so they thought it might be cool I also participate with them. So I was asked to color their comic, we got together, we had fun for a while and did comics. That sounded good, I thought. Of course, I did not know anything about that! I had never drawn or colored more than any other child, I had always loved music, dancing, singing ... no, other things, but never done anything about this, so I did not look very capable. But one day, after I repeat it occasionally and I saw them and I looked cool what they did ... I thought, well I like the decor and I like to combine colors ... I had no idea of color theory or techniques or programs ... but I thought, perhaps I can learn, can be fun and I said, well why not, I'll try. And so it all started as a hobby to hang out with friends and do something cool.

2. As a successful woman Has it been difficult for you to get into the comics industry where men predominate?

This question is funny to me, because honestly I do not consider myself a successful woman, hehehe. The truth is that it has been difficult but not because it is an industry of men, I personally have never felt any kind of rejection or additional obstacle by being female, have always valued me for my work or at least that's how I I've felt. But if it has been hard to get and hard to keep it. I think it's an industry that demands intensive and there are many people interested in working on it and this means that there is much competition and too few opportunities are given and that the level of quality required is very high for all positions in general . And if you add to that, particularly in the case of colorists, there are colorist that have many series and reduce the oportunity for others.

3. How is your typical creative and systematic process as colorful comic? How many hours a day you invest?

I work with Photoshop. The process varies if you flatter or not. If the figure of the flatter is not known, I explain briefly that is the person who selects the pages colorists, is very common in the American market because often you have very little time to deliver and process selected, it is very mechanical and helps the colorist to be faster without interfering with the artistic side. I have worked with seasons and seasons without flatter, depending on the amount of work that had at all times. First look at some page, read the script if there are any indications that you have to consider, sometimes also helps you imagine the atmosphere that must have etc. and then you get to give the base colors, if you have made old Flatts is faster and if you have to do, because it takes longer because you have to define the different areas besides choose the colors and stuff. I always try to recreate at least some atmosphere, background, before I start with the characters because the colors of the characters will vary depending on the environment where they are. And of course when choosing these tones always you have to take into account the different levels. And then you decide to enlightenment or already is indicated, as you try to follow it and give light and shade to give volume, textures etc. and finally add special effects. I tried to be clear on many occasions the different processes intermingle a bit, because well, we're not machines, is not it ?! hehehe. As for the hours I devote myself, because if I'm moving quiet in the comic about 8h, but in weeks deadline, it may become much more. A normal day deadline may be perfectly between 10-12h and is if gets complicated you have to take some more. Yes, these days are terrible.

4. What is the hardest part of being a colorist? Do you work with digital or traditional way? What is your favorite technique and coloring materials?

For me the worse or harder to be colorist has nothing to do with coloring, for me it is the work mode, at least that's how I've lived so far. To start you are autonomous with all that goes with that and the complications and costs that entails and on the other hand, at least I have not been lucky enough to be in a long series, so when you finish a miniseries, you're always thinking about what's next and how long it will. Also working patterns sometimes are hard, the colorist is who can least control this because it is the last of the chain, not counting the letterer and there are times when you really have very little time to do your job, but good this pressure to get used a little time and you take the best you can. I hear, this gets better with time in the industry so, I hope That! ☺. And maybe, well, I think I enjoy coloring, I like to convey color and help people really goal in history. It's nice to participate in something that will amuse then so many people and I like being part of a team and create cool things that make people feel, if that's what I like.

5. Who handles your social networks? Do you think that these networks ( twitter , Instagram, facebook, etc) are a good tool for the promotion and internationalization of artists?

I manage them, but it's not easy for me, lol. Always it costs me to make time for this. Of course, I think they are a tool of diffusion and helps people get to know you, follow you, you find out what's new you're doing, etc. also think it's nice, because it brings a lot to the artist with his audience, this doesn´t exist before, so I relly enjoy it.

6. You 've worked with  Fantasy Prone , IDW and Aftershock, ie the largest independent publishing houses, do you think working with Marvel or DC Comics in the future?

I would love to. Lie if I said that since I started working as a colorist I always thought that I would work for these companies and more than one editor who knows, lol. There are amazing teams and have amazing characters, of course I want to work with them, who wouln't?

7. Have you worked with excellent illustrators, as Mirko Colak, Wesley St. Claire, Alan Robinson among others, With which another illustrator you want to work? Can you comment on whether you have a new project for the future?

Puff, what a great question ... there truly many with whom I like to work because I love what they do and some do not even dare mention, jejej but if I have to get wet, I'll tell some though not all the truth. I would love to work with Pepe Larraz, Jorge Jimenez and Rafa Sandoval, the truth is that I see extremely difficult because all work and with colorists that I admire, but hey I've always been a dreamer and I will not stop now ☺. I also like to work with Sergio Dávila, is doing a great job and I think that we could do really cool things. And with Natacha Bustos, I really like his work on Moon Girl and I would enjoy a lot with your pages. And I would love to repeat with Jeff Matsuda, who did a children's book and was fascinated with drawing, sincerely and Juan Jose Ryp I made some pages that have not gotten to publish and would love us to publish something together, although I confess that I have a little scary, because even I have nightmares about the detail of your pages! Jejej But no matter, I am a brave woman and I assure you dare without hesitation ☺. Right now the project that we are in Aftershock and I am thrilled to participate again with them, is "Brothers Dracul" with Cullen Bunn, Mirko Colak, Simon Bowland and Mike Marts. I'm sure you will like this project. Mirko drawing is amazing and you can see it and Cullen ... well, he really knows how. I've been reading your script and I've been excited and telling you, really?!, But and Now what? Not I can not believe, etc.  I really liked his Unholy scripts and I this new series will be as good.

8.-What other project it is in your future yearn to realize that is or is not linked to the comics?

So yeah, I have two projects that I love to do in the future. The first is a graphic novel called "Last Light" scripted and drawn by Jacinto Jimenez and would be colored by me if a publisher got interested in it. I think the idea and the script of this comic is great and I have long wanted to collaborate on a project with him, has always liked art and so far we have not had the opportunity to publish together a comic, so hopefully to change that soon! The other project is a children's book I wrote in my spare time, takes some written years but still have not submitted to publishers because I am correcting it and is very large, jejej and as I never have too much time, as I slowly with the. This makes me really happy and I trust him a lot, so also why I did not want to rush. May it be the first of many, for me it would be incredible to combine been a colorist with this other passion.
