Sinopsis:

Synopsis

When a young girl is accused of murder for shooting her parents’ killers, her gunslinger grandfather must come out of retirement to rescue her from a hanging.

It's Josephine’s 12th birthday, and she and her farmer parents go into a small Western town for a treat. But her parents are murdered by a group of carousing cowboys, including the son of a rich local resident. When the son shows up at the sheriff’s office the next day to explain away the circumstances, Josephine takes the sheriff’s gun and shoots the son dead. As a result, his rich father insists she hang—especially when he finds out she’s kin to a famous retired gunfighter, Ethan Fuller. Ethan Fuller shows up in town to break Josephine out of town and take her someplace safe, but they’re pursued relentlessly by possies and hired gunmen, and Ethan has to make a last stand and answer for his past crimes in order to save his only remaining family.

Plot
Lucas and Katherine Fuller were about to celebrate their daughter Josie's twelfth birthday when they were approached by Andrew McGeary and his friends, all of them drunk. Andrew is the son of the most important landowner in the area and believes himself above the law. They murder Lucas and Katherine in front of Josie. Andrew's father, Robert, tried to hide this tragedy, but Josie managed to get revenge.

Just as Josie was about to be taken to trial, a guardian angel named Ethan arrives. A veteran gunman, he saves her from this tragic end. Ethan and Josie's lives are more connected than you think, and the two embark on an deadly adventure.

This story is Mike Richardson's love letter to spaghetti westerns, where the centerpiece is the search for redemption within family, which is easy to identify with and move with. It's a mix of Unforgiven and Man on Fire, with shootouts, chases, and rides into the sunset of that Wild West where the law is ruled by the fastest draw.

Rating 5 out of 5

Art
With textures, details, and a sepia tone, it transports you to that ancient, distant era. The lighting and shadows make you feel the scorching sun of those wastelands, immersing you in this story that I hope will one day be adapted into another medium. Jordi Armengol's recommendation couldn't be more accurate, and it's a must-read graphic novel with Ennio Morricone's music playing in the background.

¿Qué cómics actuales has leído últimamente?

Mis series actuales favoritas son SAGA (Vaughan/Staples), BLACK WIDOW (Thompson/Casagrande) y THE HUMAN TARGET (King/Smallwood). Me encanta THE GOON (Eric Powell) y los AGENTES DE ATLAS de la vieja escuela (Parker/Kirk). Me encanta BITTER ROOT (Walker/Brown/Greene) y MONSTRESS (Liu/Takeda). Y tengo que mencionar THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY run (Abnett/Lanning)...

1.- You have commented that the main objective of this graphic novel is to attract a young audience to the Opera, where did you get the inspiration for this idea?

Graphic novels are the preferred format for many, many readers to consume content. Anything that exists in prose nowadays also exists as a graphic novel. To Kill A Mockingbird, the graphic novel. Slaughterhouse Five, the graphic novel. The Diary of Anne Frank, the graphic novel. Romeo and Juliet, the graphic novel. Why not opera? We need to invite this massive, hungry audience to experience the opera in their preferred method first. Maybe, after that, they will be curious to come to the opera house and see a show. Either way, they just read a really cool comic!

2.- I imagine you are a fan of comics, so what is your favorite comic/graphic novel? What current comics have you read lately? Is there any comic that has included the opera in its plots?

I am indeed a lifelong, dedicated comic book fan and collector. I have too many favorites to list them all! My favorite current series are SAGA (Vaughan/Staples), BLACK WIDOW (Thompson/Casagrande), and THE HUMAN TARGET (King/Smallwood). I love THE GOON (Eric Powell) and old school AGENTS OF ATLAS (Parker/Kirk). I love BITTER ROOT (Walker/Brown/Greene) and MONSTRESS (Liu/Takeda). I love Hickman’s run on FANTASTIC FOUR (with Eaglesham, Edwards, Dragotta, and Epting). And I have to mention THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY run (Abnett/Lanning)... I COULD GO ON! There really are so many. My favorite single issues are ASTRO CITY ½ (Busiek/Anderson— it’s a MASTER CLASS in storytelling) and X-FACTOR 24 (by Louise and Walt Simonson with Bob Wiacek, which I have slabbed and signed by all three creators of ARCHANGEL, my childhood favorite). Another personal treasure is a SECRET ORIGINS collected trade from the 80s— I wore that thing out over hundreds of childhood nights. And I have *all* the existing operatic adaptations that I know of (except the old Bailey comics… so pricey!) but the best opera appearance I can think of in a superhero book has to be BATMAN 613 (Hush chapter 6 by Loeb and Lee). Harley yells “OPERA, SCHMOPERA!” …I wish I had that original art!

3.- Why do you choose the opera CARMEN to be part of this daring and brilliant initiative? why not another opera?

CARMEN is probably the most famous of all operas. It’s at least in the Top 5, no question. It was high time to be reformatted for a new audience! And it was also part of Arizona Opera’s performance season, so we could cross-promote both Carmen productions. Most, if not all, operas could be adapted into graphic novels. But in this first attempt, we wanted to launch with the most well-known opera we could. In addition to that, the story of Carmen is very powerful and relevant today.

4.- Does this graphic novel have an academic character? that is, does it serve as a starting point for other opera companies in the world to use it to teach the youngest? or for anyone who has not heard or studied anything about opera? (like Opera 101)

ABSOLUTELY YES. I was very careful to start with the novella on which the opera is based. I went back to the source— but much of that book doesn’t appear in the opera! And the opposite is true as well— major opera characters (including Micaela and Escamillo) do not appear in the original novella. So I created a hybrid as best I could… all while staying true to the Spanish and Roma cultures of the time period. I researched technology (for example, there were no matches then, but there’s a TON of smoking) and made sure I got the Spanish text right (Aneke helped me with idiomatic insults)! But even then, the author of the novella, as well as the creators of the opera, are all French… so there’s yet another layer of cultural interpretation to sift through. But it’s all accurate to the source material! Once I fit as much novella into the opera as I could, I did my own translation of the French librettos (there are two versions), making as few cuts or changes as I could. (Sadly, Carmen’s husband Garcia does not appear in our book. It’s my one regret.) But the answer is absolutely yes, the book is academic as well as entertaining— the goal was to show the reality of this story, to be historically and culturally accurate, yet introduce the world of CARMEN, the opera. I would love it if our book appeared in classrooms and libraries and homes of those who are learning about opera!

5.- Do you plan to translate this comic into several languages? Because it would be great if companies like El Sistema in Venezuela adopt this smart strategy.

That is a wonderful idea and at one point we discussed a completely Spanish-language version. I would love to see CARMEN in all languages, but for the purposes of this initial project we had to commit to one (mostly) English version. (For now.)

6.- After the project is funded, have you thought about expanding this initiative to other arts such as Classical Music, Performing Arts, etc?

YES to all of the above. Writing comics was always a pipedream of mine. Adapting CARMEN was such a fulfilling experience that I can’t wait to do it again. It works for opera, but it could also work for symphonies, songs, and ballet. Old movies, plays, anything! The answer is simple: make more comics! Let’s make them together!
