1. Thief is the pioneering video game of the "stealth" genre. What does it feel like to create a new chapter that connects Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age? Is this a fun opportunity or a stressful responsibility?

It's definitely both. As a fan, it's an incredible opportunity, but you also feel the responsibility to get it right. We know fans would notice every little detail, so we approached the project with a lot of respect for what came before us. At the same time, we didn't want to simply retread old ground, we wanted to tell a story that felt like it had always belonged between those two games.

2. What is the creative process like for writing the script for a graphic novel based on an existing video game? How does sequential art capture the suspense and mystery of this video game? Does it help that this game is in the "stealth" genre?

Writing this story was a little different because it takes place between the first two games, so we were exploring a part of Garrett's journey that players hadn't seen yet. We spent a lot of time thinking about pacing and visual storytelling. A graphic novel is naturally more limited when it comes to portraying stealth because so much of the tension in the games comes from the player's timing: waiting for a guard to turn, slipping into the shadows, deciding exactly when to make your move, etc. You can't recreate that real-time experience on a static page, but you can capture the feeling. Those quiet moments of anticipation are just as important as the action, and thankfully we had an incredible art team that really understands sequential storytelling. They know exactly how to build suspense from one panel to the next and make every page feel like it belongs in the world of Thief.

3. This project is being released in the same year as the video game Thief: The Dark Project Remastered. Can this graphic novel be considered a good starting point to prepare for that game?

I wouldn't necessarily consider it a starting point for the remaster, since it's a remaster of the first game and Pulse of Promise takes place afterward. The remaster will also be available before the graphic novel. That said, the story is designed to work whether you're discovering Thief for the first time or you've been playing it for decades. New readers will get a great introduction to Garrett and the world of Thief, while longtime fans will appreciate the connections and lore references woven throughout the story.

4. Have you considered adapting this graphic novel, Thief: Pulse of Promise, with Bit Bot into a new video game in the Thief franchise as a future project?

I'd be lying if I said the thought hadn't crossed my mind, but right now our focus is on making Pulse of Promise the best graphic novel story it can be. It gives us the opportunity to spend more time with the characters and their motivations. The quieter moments that are harder to explore in gameplay.

5. The creative team of artists involved is magnificent: Tyler Kirkham, Claudio Mastronardi, and Emanuele Ercolani. How was the brainstorming process to achieve the desired tone? Did they have access to the storyboards of the original game?

We leaned heavily into reference from the games themselves. We talked a lot about mood, architecture, lighting, and the feeling of moving through the City. Everyone brought something unique to the table. We were all chasing the same goal: making it feel unmistakably like Thief.

6. Will this Backerkit project have any other surprises besides the graphic novel? Can you give us a sneak peek?

We've already revealed things like the Mechanical Eye replica, Garrett statue, plush, but there are still a few rewards we're keeping under wraps. We want the campaign to be a celebration of Thief, so fans can expect a few more reveals as it unfolds.

7. Now that you've delved so deeply into the world of Thief, have you played them again? If so, do you feel your experience is different now?

Absolutely. I replayed the original two on PC and even dug out my old Deadly Shadows disc for the original Xbox, which is probably the one I've played the most over the years. I also revisited Thief 2014, and while I know this is an unpopular opinion, I think it's a much better game than it gets credit for. Replaying the series during development gave me an even greater appreciation for it, and I'm really excited to jump into the remaster this winter. When you spend months immersed in the world, you start noticing all the little details. The environmental storytelling, subtle bits of dialogue and throwaway lines that carry a lot more weight than you remembered.
