¡Gracias! No me malinterpretes.
1.- You have worked in many different comic book series, and now you are working in Byte Sized, the first all ages comic book from AWA, Why are you choosing this change of genre?
I know a lot of readers think of me as "the horror guy" and that's a badge of honor I wear with pride. But I also love stories for younger readers. I've written middle reader horror novels (like CROOKED HILLS) and all-ages comic books (like TERRIBLE LIZARD and the upcoming THE GHOUL NEXT DOOR). I love the genre. I love telling stories that kids can enjoy. And my hope is we can introduce a bunch of new readers to the world of comics, because there is so much there for them to enjoy!
2.- This series has some nostalgia from the 80s' classic movies like Short Circuit and Batteries not Included, Were these movies and the culture decade influenced your work?
For sure! I think it's safe to say I wouldn't be telling stories if it wasn't for movies like SHORT CIRCUIT, BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED, and GREMLINS. Those kind of stories certainly inspired some of the elements of BYTE SIZED. I wanted this to come across like an Amblin movie, only with the sensibilities of the modern era reflected.
3.- I think right now the world needs tales that are positives thanks to Covid 19, But why do you think this comic is relevant right now?
This is definitely a comic about fun and hope. That alone makes it relevant and necessary right now. My goal with this book was to give readers something that could take their minds off their worries, even for a little bit. Read it and enjoy it! Read it with your kids and enjoy it with them! But there are some undercurrents that I think are relevant right now. In BYTE SIZED, the family is isolated and trapped in their house with forces they do not fully understand. We show how they come together to face these challenged. How they rely on each other. We also see how communication (or lack thereof) and misunderstandings can escalate a situation into a disaster. How the humans in this story interact with the robotics might present a lesson or message that is relevant for our readers.
4.- I recently watched the trailer of The Empty Man, congratulations on this great achievement, What do you think is the perfect casting for Byte Sized Movie? (the comic is amazing it's just a matter of time)
Thank you! I usually don't think about casting that much, especially when the comic is just coming out. If I go down that rabbit hole I might lose hours of productivity! For BYTE SIZED, I can't help but think of an animated series or feature... something in the vein of the Pixar films. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see these characters brought to life in a live action fashion, but my heart of hearts tells me this should be animated.
5.- Can you talk about your next projects with AWA?
I can't say much at the moment, but there will be more! I'm really, really hoping that the response to BYTE SIZED is strong enough that we can get started on a follow-up! I have so many more stories to tell about these little robots!
