SINOPSIS

1.- This graphic novel that mixes fantasy with realities of current social interactions, where did you get your inspiration to make this interesting and peculiar mix of genres?

I've always been a fan of watching and reading non-human characters go through very human situations! While Wine Ghost's DNA is more imbued with Beetlejuice than anything else, the work of Lisa Hanawalt and manga series like Dorohedoro by Q Hayashida and InuYasha by Rumiko Takahashi are inspirations to my work and really champion this sub-genre of dramedy storytelling.

2.- The story talks a lot about death and somehow accepting it and not fearing it through comedy, why treat this topic like this? Do you feel that the fear of getting old or dying is a cultural misconception of our current society?

I was exposed to the concept of death at an extremely young age after my Dad passed from a motorcycle accident and because of that, I've thought a lot about mortality and potential afterlife. I think the fear of getting old falls within the same fear of the unknown that makes death scary but at the end of the day, dying is something everyone will eventually experience and aging isn't. In that way, I think aging is actually a privilege! Wine Ghost as a series is less about the existentialist unknowns of death but rather the unknowns of people and because of that the book uses death more as a backdrop than a subject being consciously explored.

3.- You also touch on topics like hell, do you think it exists or is it an abstract concept about the way we deal with life?

Oh, this is a really interesting question! The picture of hell is so different depending on the culture and religion in which it's being discussed so I can only really speak from my American and non-religious view of the subject. For many people I do think hell is used as a motivation towards desired behavior in life, akin to what you're saying but I personally don't believe in hell as a place or in the biblical sense. I like to think there's something after death but I'm not sure what that looks like.

4.- Why did you decide to make this graphic novel through crowdfunding? Is it easier than doing it with well-known publishers?

There are a few reasons why I decided to go with crowdfunding through Iron Circus! Spike Trotman, the founder of Iron Circus Comics, was really enthusiastic about the Wine Ghost mini-comics as I was self-publishing them and I think that encouragement ultimately led me to her door for the graphic novel! I never really think of crowdfunding as an easier choice, just a different one with as many pros and cons as traditional publishing houses. Ultimately, Iron Circus and by proxy crowdfunding just felt right for Wine Ghost Goes to Hell!

5.- Could you anticipate what your next project would be or if there will be a sequel to Wine Ghost?

Currently, I'm working on a 40-page unannounced project coming from a really incredible independent publisher but I'd absolutely love to do more Wine Ghost projects! She's such a fun character and I really enjoy spending time with her.
