Fans can now witness the full scope of SUMMER OF SYMBIOTES, a season’s worth of symbiote sagas to celebrate Venom’s 35^th anniversary! The insanity kicks off in May with titles like CULT OF CARNAGE: MISERY, EXTREME VENOMVERSE, CARNAGE REIGNS, and more. Here’s just some of what was revealed about what’s in store for Venom, Carnage, Red Goblin, Misery, and the rest of the Venomverse all summer long!

 

CARNAGE SEEKS TO INHERIT THE EARTH in WEB OF CARNAGE, a new series by Ram V, Francesco Manna, and more. In the aftermath of CARNAGE REIGNS where Cletus Kasady exacted his vengeance on Miles Morales and the Marvel Universe, the Carnage symbiote remains left to its own devices, adrift among the stars. With its purpose renewed, Carnage has scant few hurdles between it and a glorious ascension to the throne of the King in Black…and the first is named Morlun.

 

Alex Paknadel and Jan Bazaldua begin a new arc “Nature Vs. Nuture” in RED GOBLIN #6! CARNAGE REIGNS may be over, but Normie Osborn and the Rascal symbiote’s problems are only just beginning! Chicago, Illinois - December 9th, 2021 - The much-anticipated, in-person return of C2E2 is back. Attendees, exhibitors, creators, and more are looking for a bit of holiday spirit and cheer as they see reunite in The Windy City to share their passion for all things pop culture.

Educators and industry experts are giving their time to present the importance of sequential art in a special panel series hosted by LitX and Reading with Pictures, two organizations that believe in the educational value of this unique medium.

Libraries & Nerds – Blerds, Books, and Making Bank

Libraries are all about nerd culture! From Black Panther comics on the shelves to Harry Potter wizarding parties and Star Wars Reads days. Typically those events are created and executed by librarians who will partner with the most popular groups (largely white) out of necessity. #RepresentationMatters is more than just a hashtag, and libraries can help you make a difference. Find out from a Librarian Nerd of Color how you can present yourself, your skills, and your nerd knowledge to local library communities for fun and potential profit.

Education in the Stacks: Librarians offer Advice on Programming 

Moderator: Mariella Colon, Marikit Fain, Victoria Alt, Isabel Soto-Luna, Hal Patnott 

In this workshop, six librarians from a variety of library types and backgrounds will meet with individual attendees about potential library programming. Each panel member will spend 10 minutes with someone who wants to create a program of some sort for libraries. That person will tell the panel member their ideas, and the panel member will spitball some ways they can hone their idea into a viable program. How to connect it to education, what type of spaces might be a good fit, and a price range they can ask for.

Express Your Emanata: Using Comics and Graphic Novels for Social-Emotional Learning

Do your preschool and elementary-age students struggle to put their big feelings into words? Do the clouds over their heads leave you with a big question mark? The visual language of comics including emanata (a lightbulb above the head for an idea, three birds circling the noggin of a recently bonked character) builds the bridge between the complex thoughts and feelings of the youngest learners and a growing vocabulary. Join Jana Tropper (preschool/elementary speech-language pathologist, Reading with Pictures Director of Literacy), Lisa Wu (former teacher and industry expert), and Jamie Yocum (elementary librarian) as they present ways to use the visual language of sequential art such as emanata help our youngest learners understand and express their feelings and social-emotional needs.

Comics or Graphic Novels: A Big Question for a Big Moment

Scholars, industry professionals, and creators all have different ideas about the sequential art medium. Today, every single genre is represented through it. On top of this, the rapid explosion of the K-12 school market, the increasing demand for manga and the rising popularity of animation on streaming platforms, what is the future of the medium and how do we define it?  There is no question that comics have solidified their place in modern literature and are rapidly expanding into new spaces. A panel of creators, publishers, educators, and scholars of the medium will join to discuss the history of the sequential art medium, consider the semantics when defining, naming, and categorizing these texts, and the challenges with promoting and publishing them in new markets.

Titles You Should Be Reading and Teaching

This panel is that friend that we all need that offers up great things for us to read.  Join this fantastic panel of educators, librarians, and industry professionals as they explore graphic novels and comics that you should be reading for personal enjoyment and in the classroom.  We often do not have time to sift through catalogues, the internet, or Amazon for materials to read, but you can rest your feet for this chunk of time and let this group toss out some recommendations that you’ll be sure to love!  They might even bring a few of their favs to give away!

Join other teachers, researchers, and librarians to collaborate on comics and pop culture in the classrooms. Bring stories of your successes and stumbles, share lesson and unit plans built around your favorite pop culture texts, or simply grab a seat and swap tales from your schools and about your students.

Nothing But The Hits: Tried and True Texts, Units, and Strategies for the Comics Classroom  

 

Moderator: Adam Ebert, Ronell Whitaker, Benjamin Packard, Mike Espinos, MiKala Thompkins 

 

The Comics in the Classroom movement has never been more prevalent and the featured educators on this panel will present the “Greatest Hits” of comics and graphic novels to bring into your classroom, coupled with the units and strategies by which you can incorporate those texts into your curriculum! Attendees will leave this panel with a list of recommended text and handfuls of ideas to bring back to their own classrooms.

Improv in the Classroom!

In this panel/mini-workshop, Second City trained improvisers/teachers will walk participants through some simple improvisation games that they can use in their classroom.  Participants may watch or participate in the games demonstrated.  Attendees will walk away with games that they can play in their classrooms that Monday!

What The Kids Are Reading These Days

Join high school administrator Eric Kallenborn, art teacher Ailysh Cooper, and students from the Oak Lawn High School Comic Creation course as they discuss the benefit of comics in the classroom, what titles offer up a great entry way into the medium, and a host of other great topics. This panel is perfect for the teacher looking for inspiration to use comics/graphic novels in their classrooms or teachers/librarians and attendees simply looking to hear what high school students are into these days! Spoiler: it’s a lot of manga!

Please join this panel of teacher friends and pop culture nerds to learn how they fought the boredom of quarantine by starting a Finer Things Club as inspired by The Office. Panelists will discuss tips for finding media to chat about, scoring systems to keep things fun, including guest members, and much more!

Prepare to Defend Your Comics/Graphic Novels/Manga and Anime

Censorship and attempts at censorship can take on many forms in our education systems, libraries, bookstores and government agencies across the country.  It also becomes more intensified with each new change in the political environment.  So what can you do when faced with a challenge?  How do you react?   Maybe the better question is: How do I prepare for this?   When it comes to books of any kind, whether it is graphic novels and manga, or prose of any kind, the best measures are preventative.   This group of panelists represents decades of experience with a wide range of legal challenges in the publishing industry.
