Dark Horse Comics lanza un cómic que explora cómo prevenir y prepararse para los incendios forestales del noroeste

La Oficina de Manejo de Emergencias de Oregón en EE.UU y Dark Horse Comics han lanzado un nuevo cómic titulado Without Warning! Wildfire (Incendio ¡Sin advertencia!). Al abordar qué hacer antes y durante un incendio forestal en el noroeste, el cómic es el tercero de una serie de cómics educativos y entretenidos que promueven la preparación para emergencias.

 

“Without Warning! Wildfire comenzó porque descubrimos que muchas publicaciones de educación pública tenían dificultades para resonar en el público más joven ”, dijo Althea Rizzo, Coordinadora del Programa de Peligros Geológicos de OEM. "La serie ha sido un gran éxito, ayudándonos a involucrarnos con los jóvenes mientras presenta y refuerza el concepto de preparación".

 

Las emergencias y los desastres pueden ocurrir en cualquier momento, a menudo sin previo aviso. Empoderar a todos los habitantes de Oregon, incluidos los jóvenes, para reducir su riesgo, estar preparados y saber qué hacer cuando ocurre un desastre es fundamental para mantenerse a salvo. Los niños y adolescentes que están preparados a menudo experimentan menos ansiedad y se sienten más seguros durante emergencias y desastres reales.

 

"Smokey Bear ofrece una variedad de opciones educativas para niños pequeños, pero ha sido un desafío encontrar recursos atractivos y creativos para hablar con adolescentes y adultos jóvenes sobre la prevención de incendios forestales", dijo Kristin Babbs, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de Keep Oregon Green Association. Without Warning! Wildfire presenta personajes que caminan y acampan en un área salvaje del noroeste de EE.UU y se ven obligados a huir para salvar sus vidas para escapar de un incendio forestal que se mueve rápidamente. El cómic ayuda a enseñar a los lectores cómo protegerse a sí mismos, a sus seres queridos y a las zonas silvestres cuando se producen incendios forestales.

 

Without Warning! Wildfire está disponible para leer de forma gratuita en Dark Horse Digital, el sitio web de OEM y en aplicaciones de iOS y Android. También está disponible en Kindle, Comixology, Google Play y Apple Books. Las copias impresas están disponibles en inglés y español a través de las oficinas de manejo de emergencias del condado, Clackamas Community College y Keep Oregon Green.

Los dos primeros cómics de la serie, Without Warning! Earthquake (2014) and Without Warning! Tsunami (2016), se ha distribuido por todo el noroeste y se ha adaptado para otras regiones, lo que ayuda a respaldar la preparación en las comunidades de los EE. UU.

Dark Horse Comics releases comic book exploring how to prevent and prepare for Northwest wildfires

SALEM, Ore., (December 15, 2021)—The Oregon Office of Emergency Management and Dark Horse Comics have released a new comic book titled, Without Warning! Wildfire. Addressing what to do before and during a Northwest wildfire, the comic is third in a series of educational and entertaining comic books promoting emergency preparedness.   “The Without Warning! comic book series began because we found that many public education publications struggled to resonate with younger audiences,” said Althea Rizzo, OEM Geologic Hazards Program Coordinator. “The series has been a huge hit, helping us engage with youth while introducing and reinforcing the concept of readiness.”   Emergencies and disasters can happen at any time, often without warning. Empowering every Oregonian – including youth – to reduce their risk, be ready, and know what to do when disaster strikes is critical to staying safe. Kids and teens who are prepared often experience less anxiety and feel more confident during actual emergencies and disasters.   “Smokey Bear offers a variety of educational options for young children, but it’s been challenging to find engaging and creative resources to talk with teens and young adults about wildfire prevention,” said Kristin Babbs, President and CEO of the Keep Oregon Green Association. “This comic book fills that important gap.”    Without Warning! Wildfire features characters hiking and camping in a Northwest wilderness area who are forced to flee for their lives to escape a quickly moving wildfire. The comic helps teach readers how to protect themselves, their loved ones and wildlands when wildfires occur.    Without Warning! Wildfire is available to read for free at Dark Horse Digital, OEM’s website, and on iOS and Android apps. It is also available on Kindle, Comixology, Google Play and Apple Books. Printed copies are available in English and Spanish through county emergency management offices, Clackamas Community College and Keep Oregon Green. The first two comics in the series, Without Warning! Earthquake (published in 2014) and Without Warning! Tsunami (published in 2016), have been distributed throughout the Northwest and adapted for other regions, helping support readiness in communities across the U.S.    The comic book series originated with OEM’s GeoHazards program, which works with partners to create tools and programs to make Oregon more resilient to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.
