Matt Hawkins es un escritor veterano en los cómics que estuvo en el lanzamiento inicial de Image Comics. Comenzó su carrera en la publicación de cómics en 1993 y ha estado trabajando con Image como creador, escritor y ejecutivo durante más de 20 años. Desde 1998 hasta la fecha es Presidente/COO de Top Cow Productions y además maneja todo lo relativo a aspectos de negocios de la empresa.

El 8 de junio sale a la venta el volumen 5 de SWING, cómic escrito por Matt Hawkins y con creado con Linda Sejic y Jenni Cheung, ilustrado por Yishan Li. 1.- Entiendo que SWING es un proyecto en el que trabajaste y te dedicaste hace un tiempo, ¿Qué tan difícil es terminar este primer arco? ¿Fue aterrador o una experiencia liberadora?
Cuando comencé a escribir SWING, en realidad planeé un arco de cinco volúmenes para que estuviera delineado desde el principio. Siempre existe la posibilidad de que un libro no se venda lo suficiente para garantizar una continuación como esa, lo que da miedo... y te hace quedar mal como creador si no terminas las cosas. Escribí un final alternativo para el primer volumen por si acaso no se vendía. Afortunadamente sucedió lo contrario y SWING se ha convertido en mi libro más vendido de todos los tiempos. Fue muy liberador terminarlo de la manera que pretendía.
2.- ¿De dónde te inspiraste para escribir sobre Swingers? y ¿Cuáles fueron los comentarios de sus amigos cercanos y familiares al respecto?
La inspiración fue Sunstone de Stejpan Sejic. Tuvo tanto éxito y ese éxito fue tan impactante e inesperado que decidimos crear una categoría. Sejic ha escrito Fine Print y otros libros también en la categoría de Recuentos de la vida/Romance para adultos. Sunstone trataba sobre una relación BDSM entre dos mujeres... así que comencé a buscar estilos de vida sexuales alternativos. Estaba buscando en Google clubes de sexo y descubrí cuántos clubes de intercambio de parejas hay en los EE. UU. El éxito de Sunstone fue que se sentía auténtico y era una mirada positiva a esa subcultura sexual. Asisto a muchas convenciones y me di cuenta de que los compradores de Sunstone eran en su mayoría mujeres de entre 35 y 55 años que no tenían ningún interés en mis otros libros.

3.- ¿Alguna vez te has autocensurado al escribir una escena muy erótica? ¿Alguna vez pensaste "he ido demasiado lejos"?
Ni una sola vez. La belleza de las escenas de sexo en el libro fue que escribí este estilo de resumen de la trama y dejé que Linda Sejic y Yishan Li hicieran lo que quisieran con él. También evité poner mucho diálogo en estas escenas... así que estos son más el esfuerzo de Linda y Yishan que el mío de todos modos.
4.- Aunque este cómic trata temas controvertidos sobre las relaciones abiertas, es profundamente romántico, ¿era tu objetivo inicial escribir un cómic de romance/comedia?
El objetivo era mostrar este estilo de vida de manera positiva y por qué la gente lo hace. Cuando comencé a investigar, era difícil incluso encontrar personas que hablaran conmigo, ya que muchas personas pueden ser muy críticas con este tipo de estilo de vida, por lo que no querían ser descubiertos... ni siquiera hablar de ello. El humor en el libro es en gran parte de mi vida real y la mayoría de las situaciones familiares eran similares a las que he tenido. Ahora tengo dos hijos adultos.
5.- ¿Cuáles son los planes de futuro de Swing? otro volumen? ¿Puedes decir algo al respecto?
Estamos trabajando en Swing V1: Unicorn, que tratará sobre la mujer Maybelle que se apareció en Swing V4. Vamos a comenzar su historia antes de que Swing V1 tenga lugar (en la línea de tiempo) y luego mostraremos en este libro cómo conoce a Cathy y Dan de la serie Swing normal.

1.- I understand that SWING is a project you worked and dedicated for some time now, How difficult is it to end this first arc? Was it scary or a liberating experience?
When I started writing Swing I actually planned out a five volume arc so it was outlined from the start. There's always the chance a book won't sell to warrant continuation like that which is scary...and makes you look bad as a creator if you don't finish things. I wrote an alternative ending to the first volume on the chance it didn't sell. Fortunately, the opposite happened and Swing has become my best selling book of all time. It was very liberating to end it the way I intended.
2.- Where did you get inspired to write about Swingers? and What was the feedback from your close friends and family about it?
The inspiration was Stejpan Sejic's Sunstone. It was so successful and that success was such a shock and unexpected that we decided to create a category. Sejic has done Fine Print and other books also in the slice of life/adult romance category. Sunstone was about a BDSM relationship between two women...so I started looking for alternative sexual lifestyles. I was googling sex clubs and discovered just how many swinger clubs there are in the U.S. The success of Sunstone was that it felt authentic and it was a positive look at that sexual subculture. I do a lot of conventions and I noticed that the Sunstone buyers were largely women in the 35-55 range who had no interest in my other books.
3.- Have you ever censored yourself when writing a very erotic scene? Did you ever think "I've gone too far"?
Not once. The beauty of the sex scenes in the book was I wrote these plot summary style and let Linda Sejic and Yishan Li do what they want with it. I avoided putting much dialogue in these scenes also...so these are more the effort of Linda and Yishan than me anyway.
4.- Although this comic deals with controversial topics about open relationships it is deeply romantic, was it your initial goal to write a romance/comedy comic?
The goal was to show this lifestyle in a positive light and why people do it. When I started doing research it was difficult to even find people that would talk to me as a lot of people can be very judgmental against this kind of lifestyle so they did not want to be outed...or even talk about it. The humor in the book is largely from my real life and most of the family situations were similar to ones I've had. I have two adult sons now.
5.- What are the future plans for Swing? another volume? Can you say something about it?
We are working on Swing V1: Unicorn which will be about the woman Maybelle shown in Swing V4. We're going to start her story before Swing V1 even takes place (in the timeline) and then we will show in this book how she meets Cathy and Dan from the regular Swing series.
