AWA STUDIOS Releases NFT Position and Policy in Support of Artists

Artists Writers & Artisans (AWA), a creative business owned and operated by creators, announces a program and policies to support comic book artists in the non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace.  In contrast to the approaches of major legacy comic book publishers, AWA’s policy allows artists to make and market NFTs featuring AWA characters and creates an AWA’s artist-centric program pro-actively supports those efforts.  Specifically, AWA artists may make NFT’s from AWA comic covers and pages and also draw new, original, art with AWA characters and make NFT’s from those pieces.  Artists may do that on their own or opt to have AWA handle NFTs  for them.

“AWA was founded with faith in the principle that offering creators attractive deals along with extensive editorial and marketing support would bring out the best in them.  So far, so good,” said AWA CEO, Bill Jemas, “In approaching the burgeoning NFT market, our first steps were to form an Artist Council to help us understand what our artists want and need and to retain Gui Karyo, former Marvel CTO and COO, to guide us through the technical complexities involved in making and marketing NFTs.”

“AWA was founded to give artists and writers the best platform to tell bold and original stories in which they have a real stake.  Our decision to embrace NFTs is an extension of our core philosophy.  AWA’s Artist Council includes many of industry’s leading artists, including Mike Choi, Kaare Andrews, Jonboy Meyers, Frank Cho, and Mike Deodato Jr., who has been an outspoken critic of DC’s restrictions on NFT art.  We feel privileged to work with them and we embrace this new development as a means to help them,” says Axel Alonso, AWA’s Chief Creative officer.

“I think NFTs and their growing applications are a really new landscape in the mainstream and everyone top-to-bottom is just figuring it all out. But AWA has done and continues to do the research, and is allowing us as artwork creators to be (or not be) involved, addressing our concerns on NFTs and the whole blockchain-business, and applying them to how we handle it as a company. Giving us the permission right off the bat to tokenize our digital works as if we were selling original art, should we choose to, is a sign to me that they’re not only trying to stay ahead of the curve on this developing technology, but are also trying to respect our individual business interests from the start. I think this in turn incentivizes us to be more creative with this new medium and platform when making new works for AWA. says Mike Choi, artist of MOTHS.

“I am excited to investigate and explore new avenues to share original art! I welcome AWA's commitment to art, artists, collectors, technology and innovation,” says Kaare Andrews, writer and artist of E-RATIC.

“I think it’s a very forward thinking and progressive move for a publisher such as AWA to support its artists’ (pencilers, inkers, and colorists) ability to sell their original art in the growing NFT digital market. I’m very happy to see AWA working to set a standard on how it’s artists can sell their original works in the NFT market,” says artist Jonboy Meyers.

AWA's policy about NFT and creators is one to be followed by the whole industry. They have been an example since day one on how to treat creators with the respect they deserve and couldn't continue to do so with this new opportunity for artists. Well done, AWA,” Says Mike Deodato Jr., artist of THE RESISTANCE and BAD MOTHER.

Artists Writers & Artisans (AWA) is a comic book and digital media publisher, owned and operated by creators, founded by Marvel alumni Bill Jemas and Axel Alonso, along with Jon Miller, the former CEO of News Corp, Digital Media Group. Fully funded by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister Global, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, AWA has some of the biggest names in comics and film, such as J. Michael Straczynski, Reggie Hudlin, Garth Ennis, and Frank Cho working to craft new worlds, characters, and stories for a 21stCentury audience. Find out more about our work at AWAStudios.net.

REVIEW IN ENGLISH:

Artists, Writers & Artisans is the new comic book publisher powered by Axel Alonso (Former Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics) and Bill Jemas (Former Vice President of Marvel Comics), who serve as CCO and Editor respectively, with legendary creative teams with the aim to make the best comics possible without creative limitations where the intellectual rights are their creators (creator owned).

What's it coming from?

A global disaster leaves hundreds of millions dead in its wake. Shortly after, a few thousand suddenly manifest superhuman powers. Born under a cloud, these reborn humans must discover who they are, why they possess such great powers and what, if any, responsibility they bear for the tragedy. Are they harbingers of more tragedy to come…or Earth’s last hope?

In The Resistance # 1 million people around the planet develop supernatural powers, each with different views of life. The world's governments are beginning to rebuild their countries after 400 million people died, but they are not ready for what is to come.

What's going on?
All these improved beings begins to discover their powers and are beginning to be noticed by governments, the virus called in this XV1N1 comic changes the genome of those infected, they calculate that there are possibly 10 million people who overnight have superpowers, all different.

It appears that those with adaptable genomes are the ones who survived the virus and developed this side effect.

Different governments of the world are gathered to be able to attack this outbreak of powerful humans, of course, they all have a common goal, to suppress them so that they are not a danger to their dark political agendas, but they do not expect that several of these beings are organizing and created The Resistance, with the aim of discovering the illegal and repressive activities of all governments.

Guerita is a maid in the White House, who is monitoring the new activities of the newly elected new president, she telepathically communicates with Sandy (another telepath) who in turn works with Feyodor (super strength and skin of steel) to rescue Hasburg the US intelligence chief who was kidnapped by the same government for wanting to reveal the secrets.

Again, this comic establishes situations very similar to the one we are currently experiencing with the Coronavirus pandemic (CoronaV19), where they mention severe isolation policies.

In the end, the experts of all governments explain that these new beings are divided into several groups, those that have not yet manifested their powers, those who hide them, those who are going to use it for their benefit and those who have sleepers. If they activate them ... they only have 6 months to live ... they are called MOTH (a spinoff that will soon go on sale).

Desde entonces me he enganchado.

A veces hago diseños digitales.

Muchas gracias!

ENTREVISTA EN IDIOMA ORIGINAL

1.- Who introduced you in the world of comics? A friend? A relative?

I collected baseball cards as a kid and kind of always knew about comics because the baseball card shops often carried comics as well. I’d buy them occasionally, but never actually read them. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school, where I met a guy who was going to attend The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art after graduation that I realized comics were a medium of entertainment and not some antique collectible. I started going to the comic shop and quickly found The AutHority by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, which was ultra violent and drawn spectacularly, I’ve been hooked ever since.

2.- Without question your work has an strong and personal imprint, it’s unique, besides Frank Quitely who have been your influences as an artist?

I love pretty much all of the artist who were influenced heavily by MoebiUs. Guys like Frank Quitely, Geof Darrow, and Seth Fisher, for example. They all have a master level of craft and draftsmanship along with being completely unique and true to their own personalities.

3.- In your commissions you work with paper and pencils, Do you work in digital form? With which you feel more secure and comfortable?

I work mostly with paper and pencil. I’ll do layouts digitally sometimes. Sometimes I do them by hand and then lightbox them to the final board. I honestly feel they are the same. Digital doesn’t give you any more ability to draw well than say a more expensive pencils will. For me it’s painfully obvious when an artist uses digital shortcuts as a crouch instead of a tool.

4. - How many hours a day do you invest illustrating?

How is your typical process of creation? Anywhere from zero to twenty hours. I don’t have a very consistent schedule, many nights I won’t sleep and work for days straight. Some days I’m burnt out and don’t feel like drawing at all. I’d say on average I draw about 60 hours a week right now.

5. - Are you interested in doing a Kickstarter  book about comics? A sketchbook?

Crowd funding definitely interest me. I think it’s important to find different avenues for revenue outside of just the comic book store. There have been very big kickstarters launched recently and I find that hopeful for the future of independent creators.

6.- The Manhattan Projects with Jonathan Hickman was a intense series that mixes scifi with the world after WWII, was difficult for you to draw all those irreverent and over the top panels? have this take gives you moral issues or outside bad criticism?

I have no moral issues concerning the comics I draw. Almost all over the top panels / irreverent panels weren't in the script and I added those in on my own. I think the story comes first, so If I draw something over the top it's because the tone of the story warrants it. I tend to get lost in the world of the comic and the story comes to life in the small details all add while building the scenes and environments. I look at the over the top stuff as doing my job extra well. It's not different than say ...not liking the moral ambiguity of a scene in a movie, but still respecting / loving the way it's acted, shot, paced, the characters designs...when I'm illustrating a script I'm in service to the story that way. (Although I do tend to add A LOT of myself and humor in)

7. – Your more recently work is with John Layman in Leviathan, how many issues or volumes are you going to do?

Can you say something about this cómic that mixes Godzilla with final destination? We have 2 volumes planned out with another 1 or 2tentatively planned after that. It really just depends on my schedule in the next 2 years.

8.- Most of your body of work is with a Creator Owned books, would you like to work someday in a monthly book with  Marvel or DC?

Yes, I’ve actually written a DC story that means a lot to me that I’d like to write and draw. I think first I need to write and draw a creator owned book (I have that written too) and prove that I’m a complete creator to the Big 2. I think the biggest issue there is that I make more on my independent books than I would at the Big 2 currently, as my name isn’t big enough to demand their top rates just yet.

9. – Besides Jonathan Hickman and John Layman with which other writer you always wanted to work?

I love Jeff Lemire for the heart and humanity he puts in his characters, I love BKV, Kirkman’s pacing and understanding of how a comic works sequentially is tops, Alan Moore would be an absolute dream to work with, to try and match the depth and detail in his scripts with as much depth and detail I can manage with my art. There are lots of writers I’d love to collaborate with.

10.- Who manages your twitter, Instagram and facebook accounts? Does the social networks really helps to promote the work of a comic book artist?

I manage them all. if you’d call it that. I don’t really think it helps me out too much. I have a blue check on twitter and 7k+ followers, but only about 12 people constantly interact with me. It’s probably hurt my career more than helped it.

11. – You're a successful and young comic book artist and designer, what other project is in your future that you crave to do?

I have a few books that I’ve written that I’d like to draw, I’d like to finish The Manhattan Projects strong, I’d like to work on Spiderman and Batman, I want to convince Frank Quitely (who I know writes for himself on the side) to write me something to draw, maybe he could do all the designs and covers? It’d be fun. And again, an absolute dream would be to work with Alan Moore.

Thank you so much!
