ENTREVISTA EXCLUSIVA CON EL ARTISTA "STEVE MCNIVEN"

Tenemos la gran dicha de poder presentar esta entrevista exclusiva con el gran ilustrador Steve Mcniven, quien amablemente nos otorgó de su tiempo con respuestas llenas de sabiduría sobre su fértil e intensa carrera en la industria del cómic.

Steve McNiven se mudó de Canadá a Florida y para trabajar con la editorial de cómics emergentes CrossGen, donde se hizo muy famoso, sin embargo esta asociación terminó pronto.

El trabajo de Mcniven fue de tan alto nivel que apenas se retiró de Crossgen, fue fichado por Marvel Cómics en el año 2005, otorgándole los títulos New Avengers, Ultimate Secret y Marvel Knights 4. 

Pero su carrera se catapulta  cuando ilustra el evento Civil War con el escritor Mark Millar, que fue usada como inspiración par el filme de Marvel Studios  Capitán América Civil War . Esta novela gráfica es hasta los momentos la más vendida en la historia de Marvel Comics.

En el año 2009 Mcniven y Millar se reúnen para hacer el cómic independiente Nemesis, con el sello Millarworld, que trata sobre un villano que es tan letal y eficiente como un superhéroe. Los derechos fílmicos los posee Netflix. 

El trabajo más reciente de Mcniven y Millar fue Old Man Logan, que también fue usada como inspiración en el filme Logan de 20th Century Fox. 

Su trabajo siguió expandiéndose en varios eventos especiales de Marvel Comics como Death Of Wolverine, Monsters Unleashed, Guardianes de la Galaxia, Uncanny Avengers y muchos más, actualmente está trabajando en The Return of Wolverine con Charles Soule.

1.- Leímos que no leías ni sabías mucho de cómics, ¿quién te presentó   el mundo de los cómics? ¿Un amigo? ¿Un pariente? ¿Cómo entraste en este mundo?

¡He leído historietas desde que era un niño! Mi primera introducción al dibujo de comics fue cuando tenía 9 o 10 años y mi papá me compró How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way de Stan Lee y John Buscema. ¡Nunca he dejado de dibujar desde entonces!

2.- Has estado en la industria de cómic por más de 15 años, ¿al principio pensaste que ibas a estar en este negocio y que soportarías todo este tiempo? ¿Cuál es tu secreto para seguir evolucionando y mejorar tu arte?

No comencé a dibujar profesionalmente en cómics hasta que tenía 30 años. Es técnicamente mi tercera profesión. Me tomé un año sabático de mi puesto de docente para probar ser una artista de cómics profesional y tuve la suerte de que mi carrera despegó y ¡nunca miré hacia atrás!

3.- ¿Cuántas horas al día inviertes ilustrando? ¿Cómo es tu proceso típico de creación? ¿Utiliza sus técnicas de escultura para ayudarte a dibujar un proyecto difícil?

¡Tantas horas como pueda! Tiendo a dibujar diseños (sketchs) en la mañana y termino los lápices en la tarde. Mis habilidades de escultura están bastante oxidadas y aunque me ayudaron a entender cómo ver las cosas dimensionalmente, en estos días no las uso mucho.

4.- Escribiste y dibujaste el cómic AVSX # 1, ¿estás escribiendo algo nuevo? ¿Volverás a escribir e ilustrar al mismo tiempo en un comic?

Me imagino que probablemente lo haga en algún momento, pero probablemente no sea por contrato*, ya que el conocimiento de la continuidad del cómic es una limitación demasiado grande para mí.

*Bajo Contrato se refiere a editoriales como Marvel y DC cuyos personajes no pueden ser cambiados o modificar su historia, ya que poseen años de continuidad.

5.- Además del tan esperado Nemesis 2, ¿volverás a trabajar con Mark Millar en un libro de Millarworld? ¿Y puedes decir algo sobre The Return of Wolverine? ¿Qué podemos esperar?

Estoy seguro de que volveré a trabajar con Mark, aunque en este momento no tenemos planes de hacerlo.

¡Puedes esperar que haré todo lo posible para que el arte en The Return of Wolverine se vea optima y cuente la historia de Charles lo mejor posible!

¡Me encantaría trabajar con Mark Waid, Tom King y Jason Aaron en algún momento!

7.- ¿Quién administra tu Instagram? ¿las redes sociales realmente ayudan a promocionar el trabajo de un artista de cómics?

Lo hago yo mismo, ¡no hay asistentes por aquí! No estoy seguro de cuánto ayuda a promocionar artistas, yo establecí mi carrera en los cómics antes del auge de las redes sociales (¡gracias a Dios!), Pero me imagino que es una herramienta útil que se puede usar con otras para ayudar a desarrollar tu carrera. Para mí, simplemente la disfruto al colocar arte e interactuar con la gente a la que le gusta.

8.- ¿Usaría Kickstarter o cualquier otro crowdfunding para editar un sketchbook o cualquier otro proyecto de cómic? ¿Es el crowdfunding beneficioso para la industria del cómic?

Probablemente no, ya que parece que es muy laborioso, pero estoy seguro de que hay muchos artistas jóvenes más emprendedores que podrían beneficiarse de la plataforma.

9.- Tu trabajo ha inspirado a varios artistas y a Hollywood, ¿qué aprendió al trabajar en un gran evento de Marvel Comics como Civil War? ¿Qué cosas hubieses cambiado en ese proyecto?

Creo que lo más importante que aprendí Civil War fue cómo dibujar un montón de personajes en una sola página mientras trataba de transmitir los principales puntos de la historia. ¡No cambiaría nada en ese proyecto, fue un golpe de suerte que me lo asignaran y definitivamente ayudó a establecer mi carrera en los cómics!

10.- Eres un artista exitoso del cómic, además de eso, ¿qué otro proyecto tienes en tu futuro que anhelas hacer?

¡¿Quién sabe?! Esa es una de las mejores cosas de trabajar en este campo, hay tantas oportunidades diferentes para hacer en una amplia gama de proyectos. Solo se trata de aprovechar las oportunidades cuando surjan.

ENTREVISTA EN IDIOMA ORIGINAL

1.- I read that you did not read  or knew much about, then who introduced you in the world of comics? A friend? A relative? How did you got into comics?

I have been reading comics since I was a little kid! My first introduction to drawing comics was when I was 9 or 10 years old and my dad bought me How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by Stan Lee and John Buscema. I have never stopped drawing since then!

2. – You have been in the industry for more than 15 years, in the beginning did you thought that you were going to be in the comics business and endure all this time? What is your secret to keep evolving and improving your art?

I didn’t start drawing professionally in comics until I was in my early 30’s. It is technically my third profession. I took a sabbatical from my teaching position to take a stab at being a professional comic artist and i was lucky that my career took off and I never looked back!

3. - How many hours a day do you invest illustrating? How is your typical process of creation? Do you use your sculpture tecnniques to help draw a difficult project?

As many hours as I can manage! I tend to draw layouts in the morning and finished pencils in the afternoon. My sculpture skills are quite rusty now and although they helped me understand how to see things dimensionally I don’t use them much these days.

4.- You wrote and drawed the comic AvX #1, are you writing something new? Will you write and draw at the same time again?

I’d imagine that I probably will at some point but probably not for work for hire as the knowledge of comic book continuity is just too much of a constraint for me writing wise.

5.- Besides the long awaited Nemesis 2, will you work again with Mark Millar in a Millarworld book soon? And can you say something about The Return of Wolverine? What can we expect?

I’m sure I’ll work on something with Mark again, though we have no plans right now to do so.

You can expect that I will do my absolute best to make the artwork on Return of Wolverine look as good as I possibly can, and tell Charles’ story as well as possible!

6. – You worked with many awesome writers like Mark Millar, Brian Bendis, Charles Soule, etc., with which other writer you always wanted to work?

I’d love to work with Mark Waid, Tom King and Jason Aaron at some point !

7.- Who manages your instagram? does the social network really helps to promotionate the work from a comic book artist?

I do it myself, no assistants around here! I’m not sure how much it helps to promote artists as I established my comic career before the rise of social media (thank god!) but I’d imagine it is a helpful tool to use in conjunction with others to help develop your career. For myself, I just enjoy putting up art and interacting with the folks who like it.

8.- Will you create a Kickstarter o any other crowdfunding to edit a sketchbook or any other comic book project? Does the crowdfunding will help the comic industry?

Probably not as it seems to be a lot of work to do, but I’m sure there are a lot of more enterprising young artists out there that could benifit from the platform.

9.- Your work has inspired so many artists and Hollywood, so what did you learn about working in a huge Marvel event like Civil War? What things you have changed in that project?

I guess the biggest thing I learned from doing civil war was how to draw a whole bunch of characters on a single page while trying to get the main storytelling points across. I wouldn’t change a thing about that project really, it was a lucky stroke to be assigned the project and definitely helped to establish my career in comics!

10. – You're a successful comic book artist, besides that what other project is in your future that you crave to do?

Who knows?! That’s one of the great things about working in this field, there are so many different opportunities to do a wide range of projects. It’s just a matter of seizing the opportunities when they arise.
