1- Eres el editora de todos los cómics de Mike Mignola que están dando forma al Outerverse, que en realidad son una gran cantidad de series interconectadas, ¿cuál es tu método para editar y estar al tanto de todas las conexiones entre personajes?
¡Es mucho de lo que se hace seguimiento! Tengo algunas herramientas que uso, como copias de los libros con notas adhesivas y pestañas que me ayudan a encontrar personajes o eventos específicos, y un documento de línea de tiempo que funciona. De hecho, lanzamos una imagen de la línea de tiempo hace un par de años como póster, y ahora está un poco desactualizada pero sigue siendo útil. Con el tiempo, cuanto más trabajas en este universo y más te acercas realmente a las historias, comienzas a construir un conocimiento enciclopédico de este mundo.

2.- ¿Puede explicar la importante labor y funciones de un editor de libros de cómic?
Es una mezcla de desarrollo creativo y gestión de proyectos. Dentro de la empresa, los editores supervisan todo, desde los presupuestos y los contratos, los cronogramas, la preparación del material para las ordenes de compra, el inicio del trabajo de diseño y producción, y la facilitación de cada etapa creativa para llegar a la siguiente etapa (aprobar los esquemas antes de los guiones, luego enviar los guiones a los artistas, llevar los archivos de arte al colorista y rotulador, etc. y luego todo de nuevo para finalizar). La mejor parte es el trabajo creativo, dar retroalimentación sobre el guión y el arte, y trabajar con todo el equipo para dar vida a una historia.
3.- Como mujer exitosa y trabajadora en la industria de los cómics, ¿qué consejo importante puedes dar a los jóvenes escritores, artistas y editores que quieren incursionar en los cómics?
Siempre dicen que la mejor manera de iniciarse en los cómics es haciendo cómics, lo cual es cierto, pero puede ser difícil si estás tratando de ser un escritor/artista en solitario. Trata de encontrar a otras personas que también quieran hacer cómics: escritores, artistas, coloristas, rotulistas, editores e intenten hacer algo juntos para comenzar. Encontrar una comunidad de cómics y apoyar el trabajo de los demás es una enorme ayuda.
4.- Ahora hablemos de Giant Robot Hellboy, este personaje comenzó como un desafío automático de bocetos diarios durante la pandemia de Mike Mignola que también aparece en Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, ¿cómo fue el proceso creativo para transformar esta vaga idea en una mezcla de géneros de mecha/kaiju/horror folk? ¿Qué tan impresionante es estar involucrada y presenciar el legendario trabajo en equipo de Mignola y Fegredo?
Comenzamos a planificar la serie hace más de dos años, cuando se publicó Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook. A Mike se le ocurrió la historia de origen específica cuando estábamos en las aprobaciones de la minifigura de Mantic para el juego de mesa Hellboy, y la historia creció a partir de ahí. Esta historia está ambientada en el pasado, en los años 60 en concreto.

6.- ¿Qué puedes decir de esta nueva aventura de Hellboy que sea diferente a cualquier otra?
Si bien Hellboy definitivamente se ha visto envuelto en situaciones locas antes (como tener su cerebro conectado y controlar un robot, en este caso), esta es definitivamente una de las aventuras más salvajes de Hellboy. ¡Podrás ver cuánto se divirtieron Mike y Duncan cuando veas las páginas!

1- You are the editor of all the Mike Mignola comics that are shaping the Outerverse, that are actually a huge amount of interconnected series, what is your method to edit and be aware of all the connections between characters?
It can be a lot to keep track of! I have some tools I use, such as copies of the books with sticky notes and tabs to help me find specific characters or events, and a working timeline document. We actually released a timeline a couple years ago as a poster, and it’s now a bit outdated but still helpful! Over time, the more you work in this comic universe and the more you really get close to the stories, you start to build an encyclopedic knowledge of the world.
2.- Can you explain the important labor and duties of a cómic book editor?
It’s a mix of creative development and project management. Within the company, editors oversee everything from budgets and contracts, schedules, preparing solicitation material, initiating design and production work, and facilitating every stage of creative getting to the next stage (approving outlines before scripts, then sending scripts to artists, getting art files to the colorist and letterer, etc and then everything back in for finalizing). The best part is the creative work, giving feedback on script and art, and working with the whole team to bring a story to life.
3.- As a successful and hardworking woman in the comic books industry what important advice can you give to young writers, artists and editors that want to get into comics?
They always say the best way to get into to comics is to make comics, which is true but can be hard if you aren’t trying to be a solo writer/artist! Try to find other people who want to make comics too: writers, artists, colorists, letterers, editors, and try to make something together to start. Finding a comics community and supporting each others’ work is huge.
4.- Now let's talk about Giant Robot Hellboy, this character start as a daily sketch auto challenge during pandemic by Mike Mignola that also appear in the Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, how it was the creative process to transform this vague idea into a genre blend of mecha/kaiju/horror folk? How impressive is it to be involved and witness the legendary team work of Mignola and Fegredo?
We started planning the series more than two years ago, around the time Mike’s quarantine sketchbook was published. Mike came up with the specific backstory when we were in approvals for Mantic’s mini figure for the Hellboy board game, and the story grew from there. Because the setting and action is so big and bold, we needed an artist that can really deliver that sense of scale. Duncan can more than deliver! Seeing them work together is always magical, and this series looks and feels like a big, fun blockbuster.
5.- Will this series be in the future, present or in the cold war B.P.R.D era?
This story is set in the past, the 60s specifically.
6.- What can you say anything about this new Hellboy adventure that is different from any other?
While Hellboy has definitely gotten himself wrapped up in crazy situations before (like having his brain harnessed to control a robot, in this case), this one is definitely one of Hellboy’s wildest adventures. You will be able to tell how much fun Mike and Duncan had with it when you see the pages!
