Coincidiendo con el Mes de la Historia Filipino Americana, Clover Press y Kwento Comics lanzan en Kickstarter "THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON"

Coincidiendo con el Mes de la Historia Filipino-Americana, Kwento Comics, la editorial pionera de cómics filipino-estadounidense, se asocia con Clover Press para una campaña de Kickstarter para publicar una novela gráfica inspirada en la mitología filipina, THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON. 

Esta tapa dura de lujo de 200 páginas es una fantasía urbana para adultos jóvenes que sigue el viaje de una adolescente filipina-estadounidense con problemas que descubre una máscara misteriosa en el velorio de su bisabuela. La historia está escrita e ilustrada por un equipo creativo exclusivamente asiático y femenino de todo el mundo y la edición de tapa dura de lujo de 200 páginas presenta una nueva portada del dibujante de cómics superestrella Haining (Spirit World, DC vs. Vampires: All Out War) y un estuche opcional. La campaña Kickstarter ya está activa y se desarrolla durante todo el Mes de la Historia Filipino Americana.

Kwento Comics fue fundada por un equipo de madre e hija, Cecilia y Waverley Lim, quienes se inspiraron para crear una solución a la falta de representación asiático-estadounidense en los medios. Su objetivo al lanzar la empresa es crear personajes femeninos asiáticos destacados en la página, y al mismo tiempo destacar a las talentosas artistas y escritoras asiáticas en una industria fuertemente dominada por hombres.

"Nos dimos cuenta de que los personajes, roles y mitología asiáticos, y específicamente filipinos, no se veían en el cine, la televisión o los cómics", dijo la cofundadora de Kwento Comics, Cecilia Lim, "Queríamos ser parte de la solución y crear historias que presentan los mitos filipinos y otros asiáticos a una audiencia más amplia".

THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON es el primer lanzamiento de Kwento Comics y pretende ser el primero de una serie de libros publicados por Clover Press. El libro aborda temas como la salud mental, el trauma intergeneracional y la corrupción, con especial énfasis en sus personajes femeninos, a través de la lente de creadoras. El equipo creativo de THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON está compuesto por la escritora Kaitlyn Fajilan (Fruit Fly, Madeira), la artista Renoida Renovilla (Creative Connections and Commons, Inc.), la editora y supervisora de arte Jenapher Zheng (Oblivious, Borrowed Light) , la colorista Charlyn Duy y la cofundadora y directora de operaciones Waverley Lim (The Women's Project).

SINOPSIS

En THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON, Marisol Reyes, de diecisiete años, necesita una renovación. Después de ser expulsada de demasiadas escuelas por un comportamiento extraño e inquietante, la autoritaria madre de Mari la envía a Filipinas para empezar de nuevo. Sin embargo, la promesa de una vida normal se desvanece cuando Mari asiste al velorio de su recientemente fallecida Lola Talia. Porque es allí donde descubre una misteriosa máscara de madera que le abre visiones aterradoras... y habilidades terroríficas. Así comienza THE MASK OF HALIYA, donde Mari debe forjar nuevos aliados y luchar contra nuevos enemigos, mientras encuentra su lugar en un mundo al borde de la oscuridad. En el corazón de Cebú, un antiguo poder despierta... La Máscara ha elegido a su nuevo heredero.

(October 10, 2023) Timed to Filipino American History Month, Kwento Comics, the trailblazing Filipino-American comic book publisher, is partnering with Clover Press for a Kickstarter campaign to publish a graphic novel inspired by Philippine mythology, THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON. This 200-page deluxe hardcover is a young adult urban fantasy which follows the journey of a troubled Filipina-American teen who discovers a mysterious mask at her great-grandmother’s wake. The story is written and illustrated by an all-Asian, all-female creative team from around the world and the 200-page deluxe hardcover edition features a brand new cover by superstar comic book artist Haining (Spirit World, DC vs. Vampires: All Out War), and an optional slipcase. The Kickstarter campaign is now live and runs throughout Filipino American History Month.

Kwento Comics was founded by a mother and daughter team, Cecilia and Waverley Lim, who were inspired to create a solution to the lack of Asian American representation in media. Their goal in launching the company is to create lead Asian female characters on the page, while also highlighting the talented Asian women artists and writers in an industry that is heavily male-dominated. 

“We realized that Asian – and specifically, Filipino – characters, roles, and mythology were not seen in film, television, or comic books,” said Kwento Comics Co-Founder Cecilia Lim, “We wanted to be part of the solution and create stories that introduce Filipino and other Asian mythos to a wider audience." 

“We knew that the creation of these characters starts with women who look like us, who can share our stories and shared experiences in an authentic way, and in doing so, highlight the wonderous world of Philippine and other Asian mythology in our graphic novels,” said Kwento Comics Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Waverley Lim.

THE MASK OF HALIYA: HEIR TO THE WARRIOR MOON is the first release from Kwento Comics and is intended to be the first in a series of books published by Clover Press. In THE MASK OF HALIYA, seventeen-year-old Marisol Reyes is in need of a do-over. After getting kicked out of one too many schools for strange and unsettling behavior, Mari’s overbearing mother sends her to the Philippines for a fresh start. The promise of a normal life is dashed, however, when Mari attends her recently deceased Lola Talia's wake. For it’s there she discovers a mysterious wooden mask that unlocks frightening visions… and terrifying abilities. So begins THE MASK OF HALIYA, where Mari must forge new allies and battle new foes, all while finding her place in a world on the brink of darkness. In the heart of Cebu, an ancient power awakens…The Mask has chosen its new heir.
