Actualmente tiene un proeycto en formato comic con Top Cow llamado A.R.C, ANIMAL RIGHTS COLLECTIVE (ONE-SHOT), sobre crimen y misterio sobre derechos de los animales y ecologismo que Paul Feinstein escribe con Matt Hawkins, que sale a la venta el 8 de marzo de 2023.
En base a este importante lanzamiento de Top Cow, realizamos una entrevista a Paul sobre este nuevo proyecto.
1.- Viajas mucho y tristemente eres testigo de los terribles daños ecológicos en el mundo, de todos los países que visitas, ¿cuál fue el más impactante?
He visto muchas cosas desagradables. En la ciudad de Panamá hay un zoológico que parecía una cámara de tortura con animales grandes en jaulas diminutas. En Tailandia he visto algunas cosas horribles. Los elefantes en cautiverio que se utilizan para atraer a los turistas a menudo se mantienen en pésimas condiciones. Una vez vi un tigre en Tailandia que tenía un collar de metal gigante y los turistas podían sentarse junto a él y tomar una foto, pero el tigre estaba tan drogado que ni siquiera se movía, ¿evidentemente manteniendo a los turistas a salvo? Las cosas más impactantes son cuando puedes ver las heridas de los animales que se utilizan para el entretenimiento: cicatrices de latigazos y demás. Mierda como esta sucede en todo el mundo y es muy inquietante. Hablando más sobre la degradación ambiental, solo queda el 10% de los bosques de Madagascar, ni siquiera sabemos cuántas de las especies que hemos causado se extinguieron solo en esa isla. Más del 50% de la selva tropical de Borneo ha desaparecido. Ves millas y millas y millas de huertos de palmeras en Indonesia que solían ser selvas y han aniquilado especies y destruido la calidad del aire, todo para que podamos tener productos de palma. Cuando ves esas millas de palmeras, es bastante devastador mirar, sabiendo cuánta flora y fauna simplemente se eliminó. Hay una razón muy clara por la que estamos en medio del sexto evento de Gran Extinción del planeta y es totalmente causado por nosotros.

2.-Eres un periodista experimentado, ¿qué encuentras en el cómic como un medio masivo que puede difundir este mensaje de conciencia ecológica que otros medios no pueden?
No sé si compro la premisa de la pregunta. Creo que cualquier conciencia es buena. Creo que el mensaje de A.R.C. necesita más conciencia en general, por lo que si los cómics pueden llegar a una audiencia que una publicación de viajes no puede, entonces eso es genial. Cuanto más haya por ahí, mejor estaremos todos. Los turistas pueden pensar dos veces sobre los tipos de experiencias con animales que quieren tener en todo el mundo y si esas experiencias están haciendo más daño que bien cuando pueden leer sobre estas cosas en varios lugares.

3.- ¿Crees que esta serie será una miniserie independiente o preparaste muchos arcos diferentes?
Esa es probablemente una pregunta para Matt (Hawkins) . Pero me encantaría seguir trabajando en esta serie y desarrollarla al máximo. Creo que el mensaje es muy importante, y esta es una muy buena manera de transmitirlo. La cantidad de investigación que Matt hizo solo para profundizar en la parte más vulnerable de este mundo fue increíble y ayudó a que esta idea cobrara vida de formas muy realistas. Así que espero que podamos continuar mientras la gente esté interesada.

INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH
1.- You travel a lot and sadly witness the terrible ecological damages in the world, of all the countries you visit, what was the most shocking?
I've seen a lot of nasty stuff. In Panama City there's a zoo that felt like a torture chamber with large animals in tiny cages. In Thailand I've seen some horrendous things. The elephants in captivity that are used to lure tourists are often kept in terrible conditions. I once saw a tiger in Thailand that had a giant metal collar and tourists could sit next to it and take a photo - but the tiger was so drugged up, that it wouldn't even move - evidently keeping the tourists safe? The most shocking things are when you can see the wounds on animals that are used for entertainment - whip scars, and such. Shit like that happens all over the world and it's all very disturbing. Talking more about environmental degradation - only 10% of Madagascar's forest remains - we don't even know how many of the species we've caused to go extinct on that island alone. More than 50% of Borneo's rain forest is gone. You see miles and miles and miles of palm orchards in Indonesia that used to be jungle and they've wiped out species and destroyed their air quality - all so we can have palm products. When you see those miles of palm trees it's pretty devastating to look at, knowing how much flora and fauna was simply wiped out. There's a very clear reason we're in the middle of the planet's 6th Great Extinction event and it's entirely caused by us
2.-Your are an experienced journalist, what do you find in comics as a massive medium that can spread this message of ecological awareness that other mediums can't?
I don't know if I buy the premise of the question. I think any awareness is good. I think the message of A.R.C. needs more awareness broadly, so if comics can reach an audience that a travel publication can't, then that's great. The more that's out there, the better off we'll all be. Tourists might think twice about the types of animal experiences they want to have around the world and whether those experiences are doing more harm than good when they can read about this stuff in multiple places.
3.- Do you think this series will be a stand alone miniseries or did you prepare many different arcs?
That's probably a question for Matt. But I would love to continue working on this series and flesh it out to its fullest extent. I think the message is so important, and this is a really good way to get it across. The amount of research that Matt did alone to dig into the underbelly of this world was incredible and helped make this idea come to life in very realistic ways. So hopefully we can continue it for as long as people are interested.
