ENTREVISTA CON STEVE NILES SOBRE EL LANZAMIENTO DE "CAL McDONALD: PLAGUE OF EVIL AND OTHER STORIES" EN KICKSTARTER

La he realizado junto a Andrea Mutti para The Lab Press.

Raymond Chandler: THE BIG SLEEP
Dashiell Hammet: THE MALTESE FALCON
Jim Thompson: THE KILLER INSIDE ME
James M. Cain: THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE
James Ellroy: The whole LA series including BLACK DAHLIA and LA CONFIDENTIAL

Entrevista en idioma original

(inglés):

1.- Cal McDonald is an enigmatic character; did you ever imagine that, after 36 years, he would still remain relevant in pop culture? Why do you think this character is so beloved?

SN: I think it’s his attitude. He doesn’t take crap from anybody but at the same time has a great heart. He means well most of the time. He’s just gruff and drunk.

2.- What initially inspired you to create Cal—this detective whose adventures blend noir with supernatural horror, and whose grit and laid-back attitude allow him to solve such spine-chilling cases?

SN: I started out, in my late teens, trying to write hardboiled fiction like Raymond Chandler, Jim Thomson and Mickey Spillane but it always fell flat. The stories just felt like tributes. So I added monsters and made Cal a drug addict and the whole world exploded. It felt fresh and new.

3.- *Cal McDonald: Plague of Evil and Other Stories* involves living comic book legends like Joe Jusko, Francesco Francavilla, Liam Sharpe, Christopher Mitten, Alison Sampson, and others. How does it feel to lead this comic book "dream team" on this new Kickstarter project?

SN: I feel very lucky and fortunate to have so many talented friends. Joe’s cover is one of my favorite Cal pieces ever and everybody else came through with flying colors. I gave them each a story and told them to do what they wanted. Nobody disappointed.

4.- Why did you decide to make this project a prose work rather than a graphic novel?

SN: Cal McDonald started as prose when I was very young. The very first story BIG HEAD was adapted from a prose short I wrote. I can just get more into Cal’s head with prose and I think that’s when the stories work the best. I did comics for a long time. These days prose is just more fun.

5.- Which of the rewards for this Kickstarter project are you most excited about?

SN: I’m really excited about the lithos of Jusko’s cover and I am very excited about the hardcover with a slipcase. They look gorgeous.

6.- This year, I’ve witnessed two of your crowdfunding projects—*Heartbreak Manor* on Zoop and now *Cal McDonald: Plague of Evil and Other Stories* on Kickstarter. Can you give us a sneak peek at your next crowdfunding project, or perhaps something for classic comic book publishers?

SN: I’m not doing any other crowdfunders right now but I have two other projects I’m excited about. Just released is an auto-bio book I wrote called TAKE IT BACK about life and my days playing music in the DC scene. The other is a massive sci-fi horror book called CALLISTO. I did it with Andrea Mutti for The Lab Press. It will be out in early October and I hope people will check it out.

7.- Could you recommend five essential noir novels for readers picking up a Cal McDonald story for the very first time?

SN: For me…
Raymond Chandler: THE BIG SLEEP
Dashiell Hammet: THE MALTESE FALCON
Jim Thompson: THE KILLER INSIDE ME
James M. Cain: THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE
James Ellroy: The whole LA series including BLACK DAHLIA and LA CONFIDENTIAL

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cloverpress/marvel-masterworks?ref=2k0cxs

Marvel Masterworks: Super-Villain Team-Up vol. Recopila *Giant-Size Super-Villain Team-Up* (1975) n.º 1-2, *Super-Villain Team-Up* (1975) n.º 1-17, *Marvel Spotlight* (1971) n.º 27, *The Avengers* (1963) n.º 154-156, *The Champions* (1975) n.º 16 y material de *Marvel Preview* (1975) n.º 21.

Incluye una introducción de Roy Thomas.

Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor, vol. Recopila *The Mighty Thor* (1966) n.º 360-369 y *Balder the Brave* (1985) n.º 1-4.

Incluye una introducción de Walter Simonson.

Marvel Masterworks: The Tomb of Dracula vol. Recopila *The Tomb of Dracula* (1972) n.º 56-70.
