Plot and Art
This charming graphic novel chronicles the summer Luke left childhood behind to step into adolescence. What promised to be the usual annual beach trip ended up changing everything.

With Mitchell—his best vacation friend—running late, the shy Luke is forced to socialize with other young people. His skill at the video game *Street Fighter II* serves as a bridge to overcome rejection; however, the trip also confronts him with the harsh reality of bullying, the forging of new bonds, and the painful breaking of others.

This vacation marks a point of no return: Luke must process the pain of various losses and bid farewell to the summer sanctuary he had so eagerly awaited each year—a place that ultimately broke his heart.

The narrative is compelling, thanks to how easily we connect with its premise: the end of a chapter in life. Growing up is inevitable and often hard to accept, but when maturity arrives alongside profound loss, the story transforms into a powerful life lesson.

Eduardo Medeiros bravely shares a deeply intimate and painful tale, using a naive, cartoonish illustration style that softens the emotional impact of that unforgettable summer.

Summary
A story about the inevitable transition to adulthood and life's harsh realities; a work that teaches us to value and welcome those who choose to walk the path alongside us

El aclamado historietista Eduardo Medeiros presenta BATTLE IN THE FLOWER GARDENS

A Coming-Of-Age Story About Two Best Friends and One Unforgettable Summer

The Original Graphic Novel Arrives This Summer From Comixology Originals

BattleInTheFlowerGardens COVER.jpg

August 4, 2026—New York, NY—Acclaimed Brazilian cartoonist Eduardo Medeiros (Roderick and the City of Morhil, Funny Creek, Open Bar) presents Battle In The Flower Gardens, a coming-of-age original graphic novel about two best friends and one unforgettable summer. Written, drawn, and colored by Eduardo Medeiros with lettering by Deyvison Manes, Battle In The Flower Gardens will debut on August 25, 2026 from Amazon’s Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line.

Set in a beautiful beachside town, Battle in the Flower Gardens follows two adolescents on the precipice of adulthood. Culling from real life experience, Medeiros weaves a story of joy, sadness, and the magical feeling of summers that last forever, that will keep the reader engaged until the very last page. As for the art, Medeiros has divided the look of the art into two distinct and compelling styles to capture the journey of self-discovery and growth the character is experiencing.

Every summer, Luke goes to the beach with his parents and his best friend, Mitchell, with whom he shares various geek interests and pastimes. But this summer everything changes, testing and altering their friendship forever.

"Battle in the Flower Gardens is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time," says Medeiros. "When I was a young boy, my family had a tradition of spending every summer at Capão Novo, a beachside town in southern Brazil. It's where I have some of my fondest memories and much of that has found its way into this book."

Like many teenagers in the 90s, Luke and Mitchell find refuge from their parents and the real world in the arcades. As the summer lingers on, the boys struggle to navigate their friendship, culminating in a battle over video game skills that has real life consequences and will reverberate amongst the teenagers forever.

Medeiros continued, "This book is deeply personal and the process of creating it took me on a sweet journey back to the days of my youth. I hope readers enjoy the story and I encourage them to reminisce about the experiences that have shaped them."

Ultimately, Battle in the Flower Gardens is a story about family, friendship, and the unexpectedness of life.

Plot
In the early 1950s, three friends love to make home movies, especially Delmont Reeves, who, helped by Oliver Ozawa and Junior Jackson, let their imaginations run wild. However, they are living through the consequences of the post-war period of World War II, where they were treated badly and with bullying out of control at the beginning of the Cold War with Russia, violence between people was out of control. Delmont lost an eye and because he was poor and black, he had to apologize to his aggressor.

At the cinema, everyone watches the educational film "Duck and Cover" that teaches how to protect yourself in case of an air attack, but no one believes that this is possible.

Delmont, Oliver and Junior get involved in a fight, which results in them being on detention with at school, when the atomic bomb alarm sounds and that's when everything changes, an attack begins with futuristic weapons and ships led by Russia. The vehicles they use seem to be taken from H.G Wells' War of the Worlds.

Now everyone's dreams come down to just surviving this unimaginable nightmare.

This comic manages to transport us to that decade, capturing that intensity and post-war/Cold War aggression so characteristic, where in familiar story circumstances it adds raw and dystopian science fiction. Snyder's narrative is precise, where all the details are key, nothing is filler.

This first comic includes several extra pages showing the art step by step, as well as the coloring and character design process.

Art
Rafael Albuquerque presents that detailed art where facial expressions are key and body language that defines and emphasizes the situation narrated by the script, the anatomies highlight the corpulence characteristic of the teenagers of that time. It is a mesmerizing artistic work with colors that sometimes offer a dreamlike atmosphere.

SINOPSIS

Comixology Originals Announces

The Girl Who Draws on Whales,

the First YA Original Graphic Novel Written and Drawn by Ariela Kristantina,

the Eisner Award-Nominated Artist of

Adora and the Distance

Available digitally from Comixology Originals October 2024

Coming to Print from Dark Horse Spring 2025

FML #1

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (July 22, 2024)—Timed to Comic-Con International San Diego, Comixology Originals announced a riveting new original graphic novel, The Girl Who Draws on Whales, by Ariela Kristantina, the artist of the Eisner award-nominated original graphic novel Adora and the Distance. This epic YA adventure about a sister and brother struggling for survival who must use their art to save their world, marks the first-ever graphic novel that Kristantina has both written and illustrated.

In The Girl Who Draws on Whales, Kristantina takes readers on a powerful and atmospheric journey through a lush island environment inspired by her homeland of Indonesia. With soft and inspiring colors by Sarah Stern, letters by Bernardo Brice, and edits by Will Dennis, The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a captivating and visually stunning story of exploration and discovery. The Girl Who Draws on Whales will be available digitally on October 8, 2024, from Amazon’s exclusive digital content line and arrives in print from Dark Horse Books in bookstores on March 25, 2025, and in comic shops on March 26, 2025.

"Creating The Girl Who Draws on Whales has been a deeply personal and exhilarating experience. Living in the island nation of Indonesia, surrounded by the beauty and mystery of the sea, I drew inspiration from the rich landscapes and diverse cultures of our islands. Through Wangi and Banyu's story, I wanted to capture the bravery it takes to defy expectations and the strength found in siblinghood. This journey of art, courage, and discovery reflects the resilience of our spirit and the magic that storytelling brings to life. I hope readers feel the same sense of wonder and connection that I felt while crafting this tale."

The Girl Who Draws on Whales is set in a post-apocalyptic world, several centuries after “The Great Flood.” Siblings Wangi and her younger brother Banyu live in a sea-village. Wangi has a special bond with the Great Whales that visit the sea-village and they allow her to draw on their backs. Sometimes they return with new drawings on them. Wangi believes that there are other sea-villages or island settlements scattered around their oceanic world and that they are sending her messages but none of the elders listen to her.

One day, a new whale arrives in the village alone, wounded, and dying—this whale has a drawing on her back that doesn't look like the previous drawings. Motivated by this mystery, Wangi vows to investigate. Although forbidden by her parents and the village elders, Wangi—along with a stowaway, who happens to be her younger brother Banyu—embarks on a wondrous sea journey to investigate where the drawings are coming from—only to find much more than they were expecting.

The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a testimony to the power of stories—their uncanny ability to entertain, educate and, ultimately, unite us.

"The Girl Who Draws on Whales is a captivating and inspirational story," says Jeff DiBartolomeo, Comixology’s GM and CTO. "Finding an incredible artist that's also a brilliant storyteller is rare, and this book showcases Ariela's amazing talents at both. We're very excited that Ariela is making her writing debut with Comixology Originals, and we can't wait for readers to experience this outstanding work."
