RESEÑA DE "SERPIENTE #1" DE TODD MATTHY

¿De qué viene?

Algunas leyendas acechan. Otras cazan.

What's it coming from?
Some Legends haunt. Others hunt.

She drowned her children in a moment of rage. Then she drowned herself.

Punishing her unfaithful husband came at a terrible cost. For her crimes, María was denied the afterlife — cursed instead to wander rivers and canals as La Llorona, the weeping woman, doomed to forever search for her lost children… and damned to destroy others along the way.

But now, vengeance takes a new form.

When María encounters Akna Caneck — a fierce, modern-day woman with Maya blood and a magical necklace linked to ancient power — everything changes. Bound by grief, rage, and the spirit world, they forge an unexpected alliance.

Plot
Akna Caneck is an expert in urban mythology, and she's being interviewed because a series of strange events have occurred related to attacks on Latino immigrants on the Texas border, attributed to La Llorona. La Llorona tells the story of a tormented soul who tragically lost her children and searches for them in new places, her cries of pain and endless weeping. Akna doesn't believe in mythologies until she's caught in a human trafficking ring, and her grief activates a medallion of the Aztec goddess of motherhood and fertility, which communicates with La Llorona. This shared pain leads them to work together. This is an interesting and highly relevant story where the legend of La Llorona transforms into a kind of vigilante. The analysis of this important figure in Latin American urban legends is brilliant. Art
It features many textures that enhance the details and a strong influence from Latin American art.
Summary
The myth of La Llorona is refreshed with a current and relevant story, mystery, action, and folkloric horror.

“MACHO MAN” Randy Savage.

INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH

1.- How was the transition of genres from going from a fantasy/sci-fi comic like Robot vs Princess to a wrestling one? Where did you get inspired?

In many ways they’re similar. With Robots vs. Princesses I had to build the world from the ground up, name the kingdoms, draw maps etc. Disciple is set in the modern world, but I had to build a wrestling company with wrestlers, PPVs, wrestlers, and angles (storylines).

I was inspired to do this story while listening to Motörhead’s “Orgasmatron.” I was going through a tough personally when heard the line “Your bones will build my palaces. Your eyes will stud my crown. For I am Mars, the God of War, and I will cut you down.”

The image of a wrestler flashed in my head and from there I went to work.

2.- I allow myself to affirm that you are a fan of wrestling, since when did you have the curiosity to know how these athletes create a personality as a fighter? I mean, what do you find most interesting about these personality transformations?

Wrestling is such a unique world. For years it was a secret society where men manipulated emotions to get people to pay to see something they knew was predetermined. They lived this life. If a good guy and a bad guy were seen riding or BBQing together they were fired. If you got into a bar fight and lost, you were fired for losing. All to protect the credibility of the business. Who wouldn’t want to set a story in that world?

As for crafting personalities, a lot of these guys are playing exaggerated versions of themselves or are so over the top, they write themselves.

3.- What is your favorite wrestler of all time?
“Macho Man” Randy Savage.

4.- This comic mixes Greek/Roman mythology with wrestling, can it be said that as humans we have the need to follow or admire something or someone unattainable? like an intrinsic aspirational need in our DNA? Do you think this is a good thing or does it keep us gullible and easy to manipulate?

Wow, good question. It’s actually one of the book’s themes. I think we aspire to be people that take control and get things done. We admire people who metaphorically smash the walls the life puts in front of us. In myths, heroes solve problems thrown at them using their wits, strength, or a combination of both. Wrestling gives us this. There’s a person you’re predisposed to like and one you hate. The bad guy is going to cheat to win and the good guy has to outwit and overpower him so he can pin him to the ground and win. He took control and won.

Whether this is a good thing or something that can be exploited, I’d say both. We admire and want to be in control. We look to people who are confident and can back it up with success. I think that’s something we should aspire to. However, it can easily be manipulated. Look at politics.

One of the things I loved about writing Disciple is it wrestles (no pun intended) with this very question.

5.- How did you meet the illustrators Jordan Di Renzo and Martin Plsko? How was the creative process of working with two artists with such unique artistic imprints? At some point did the three of you have a brainstorming session together?

The first time they met was on a group email. Martin was the original artist when I first developed the project. We met on the Comics Experience boards and crafted the first 8 pages to pitch. Disciple stalled for a little bit and another project was offered to him and it was ready to go. There’s no hard feelings and he’s been a major help and very supportive of the Kickstarter.

I met Jordan at the Creator After Con event during NY Comic Con. I saw his art and was floored by the detail. We talked and I told him about the project and he came aboard. Through him I met colorist Vlad Vov and together they picked up the book and it looks like it hasn’t missed a beat.

6.- Why do you think that Kickstarter or other crowdfunding platforms are the most appropriate for creator owned projects? is this the future of independent comics?

I think it’s good because you can tailor your project to a specific audience as opposed to a general one. It’s also a good marketing tool because you’re creating an event for a limited amount of time. If people don’t back it during a certain window, they’ve missed their chance. I think it’s the now of independent comics.

And again thank you so much for this chance
